SLIDE SHOW: Terry John Woods' Summer House

  The cover of the book. By adding just a simple amount of color you can create a dramatic feel to any room. Terry's living room in Maine is mostly white and simply decorated. One day while out looking for antiques, Terry found this old apple green door from a salvage shop. He attached an old arched wooden vent that visually takes your eye off the slightly uneven ceiling. Adding this old door has created color and texture that the room was lacking. It has allowed him now to add complementing colors such as cheery green pillows that speak summer freshness throughout the year.

  A vintage marble sink was installed bedside for easy access when bathroom space is a premium during those "full house" weekends. Fresh cut flowers from the summer garden fill the air with their sweetness as crisp "line dried" cotton sheets cover the bed.

  Terry and Dale's home in Down East Maine is an early center hall cape. From that hallway you can get to every room in the house. Warm based colors of tan walls and pale gray floors complement each other as well as all the rooms leading from the hall. Nautical collectibles like the old pond boat in the dining room and faded ocean painting on the stair well gives a common visual balance from room to room. Try to keep your hall neutral based in color, simple in furnishings, and have items with common attributes from room to room, let your hallway introduce each room as you enter from it.

  A collection of vibrant green dishes are stacked on open shelving in the kitchen. The dishes collected one-by-one give the area much needed color as well as being useful in the kitchen. Colorful cookbooks lined up on the counter are easily accessible and visually appealing. Make sure to bring everyday things out from behind the cupboard door and place them where they can be used and enjoyed in your home.

  Water skis lean against the summer camp's side porch while rubber flippers rest on an old wooden box. While these items are used daily they also complement the carefree look of the summery room.

  Blue walls in Terry and Dale's summer house dining room create a cool back drop for the painted steel gray chairs. the chairs are reproductions and were picked up inexpensively at a thrift store. After several coats of paint and some distressing they now add a fresh look to the area. The room is narrow so Terry had a table made similar to a potting table with no 'over-hang' on the top to allow more space in the room. The chairs were very formal in design but by adding a coat of paint they now have a more summery casual feel.

  A row of mismatched coffee mugs hang in the summer kitchen. No longer in complete sets they now take center stage at the summer house where they are used daily.

  A single dark green painted porch rocker welcomes all to the screened porch. Try adding additional comfort to your porch rockers with cotton filled pillow seats with bold prints that are are bright in summer colors.

  Old pale colored bottles once hidden at the back of the cupboard now stand front and center on the fireplace mantle. Photocopied ship graphics were rolled and placed inside each bottle to add a ship in a bottle look.
