2011 Spring Photo Contest Finalists

We received a great response to our first-ever spring photo contest! After serious deliberation, we’ve narrowed it down to five images that stand out from the rest. Here are the judges’ comments on why these five photos made it into the finals.

Spring Flowers by Kristin Burchsted
The unexpected focus in this composition caught our attention right away. Not showing the traditional, expected angle makes the shot more graphic, bold and colorful.

Old Orchard Pier by Moe Chen
We are definitely suckers for black and white photos (2 made the surprising cut for our spring contest), and we love the composition of this shot. Utilizing a long exposure gives this shot a dreamy fine art quality. It doesn’t portray spring in the conventional way, but it does make us think of the upcoming beach season and the promise of what summer on the boardwalk holds.

Salty at the Nantucket Daffodil Festival by Charlotte Carey Photography
We love the composition of the classic splash of Nantucket red pants on the right as well as the red dog leash winding through the frame. And who can resist a puppy?

At the Dock by Jessica Vescera
We were drawn to the artistic touches that give this digital image a hand printed quality. Here in New England, we know that melting ice and mud are as much a part of spring as flower buds and baby birds.

The Reading Bench by David Stone
This feels like a breath of fresh spring air. The architectural element of the bench surrounded by spring blooms is a nice addition in terms of visual interest and composition.

We would like to congratulate the finalists and thank all who entered the spring photo contest. For another chance to have your photo published in Yankee Magazine, enter our “Summer Photo Contest“!
