In his workshop off the garage, Baxter, no longer acting, builds handcrafted furniture that he finishes with Old-Fashioned Milk Paint, just like the kind he and Bonnie used on the living-room beams. “It’s so versatile,”
he explains. “The colors are gorgeous; I love it.”

This nontoxic, environmentally friendly paint has been around for a long time. Made from natural materials, including earth pigments and milk protein, it’s safe for almost any use. The deep, rich powders mix with water to yield lovely tones of salmon, pumpkin, mustard, and sea green–authentic, Early Colonial colors that won’t fade. (In response to consumers who want an environmentally natural paint that covers nonporous surfaces, such as interior walls, the company has come up with a new product called SafePaint. Like the firm’s traditional milk paint, SafePaint doesn’t fade.)

Beds, coffee tables, bookshelves, and mirrors are just a few of the items Baxter paints, but he’s added his own twist to applying this old-time product. By combining milk paint with shellac, oil paint, and wax, he achieves a range of effects that result in gorgeous crackled, distressed, one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork. In these lovely surroundings, all work seems like play.
