Liberty Hotel,
It took a sense of humor and style to turn a famous jail into a posh hotel, and that spirit informs everything at the Liberty, from the restaurants Clink, Alibi, and Scampo (Italian for “escape”) to the stunning atrium and the many thoughtful touches, such as Prosecco on arrival. Rates: from $699, including full breakfast. 215 Charles St. 617-224-4000;

Kendall Hotel,
Rooms start at under $200 a night, but the experience feels much more boutique than budget. It’s located in Kendall Square, less than a block from the T and a short walk over the bridge into Boston. Rates: from $169, including full breakfast. 350 Main St. 866-566-1300, 617-577-1300;

XV Beacon,
Now in its 12th year, this landmark 62-room Beaux Arts beauty, built in 1903, still feels fresh and uniquely Bostonian, with surrounds both modern and traditional, above-and-beyond service (including an in-town courtesy car), and a prime location just steps from the gold-domed State House. Rates: from $395. 15 Beacon St. 617-670-1500;

Aisling B&B,
Located in a South End Victorian row house, this famously friendly three-room B&B puts you in the heart of Boston’s most chic neighborhood. Stylish rooms, a great breakfast, and friendly hosts–all for a great price. Rates: $200, including full breakfast. 21 East Concord St. 617-206-8049;
