Life Coach Cheryl Richardson Offers Tips for Living the Good Life Despite a Bad Economy in Yankee's March/April Issue
Dublin, New Hampshire (February 2009)–Yankee Magazine’s March/April “Big Question” column offers tips on how to live the good life from New York Times bestselling author Cheryl Richardson. She lives on Massachusetts’ North Shore and believes that Yankees have the tenacity and the commitment to make the types of changes she recommends.
“We’re looking for things outside ourselves to define how valuable we are. We need to do the opposite,” Ms. Richardson says. “When we see that our 401(k)s have gone down, or we’re losing our jobs, what ends up happening is that our external reference for our value disappears. And hopefully we’re forced to go inside and say, Okay, I’ve been allowing the outside world to define who I am, and that needs to change.”
In the interview, Ms. Richardson shares an exercise that she asked her clients to complete. Called the “Absolute Yes” list, it ultimately encourages people to reflect on their priorities and evaluate how well they adhere to those priorities.

- On each of five separate index cards, list a different priority for the next three to six months. Priorities may include goals such as improved health, financial well-being, or completing a work project.
- Number the cards by priority and place them in visible spots, such as by your phone or office desk.
- Be conscious of the priorities on your list. Evaluate how you spend time and energy, and realize when you’re wasting effort on things that are not on the list.
