Featured Photographer: August 2011

Butch Lombardi has had a camera in his hand most of his life. He was the kid at Boy Scout camp with a camera; the guy in the platoon with a camera; the guy on his honeymoon with a camera. He bought his first 35mm camera when he started to work for a living, and although he participated in a few juried art shows over the years, time was too scarce to fully commit to the endeavor.

When Butch retired in 1998, he filled his spare time playing golf until his sister, Judy, Yankee‘s June 2011 Featured Photographer, started sending him cards with pictures she had shot around her home in Vermont. Her photography stirred something in him and he started shooting film again, although he quickly realized that digital was the way to go. Like Judy, he gravitated to landscape, wildlife, and nature photography and started to roam the East Bay area of Rhode Island with his cameras. This part of Rhode Island is unique: a small sliver of the state in which each town borders some part of the bay.

Although Butch has shot photos all over New England, Canada, the Desert Southwest, Ireland, and Portugal, he never tires of photographing the East Bay. His favorite spot is the Warren waterfront, which he feels rivals any waterfront in New England for the quintessential New England seaside scene. His passion for the area comes through in his work, which has been featured in many galleries across Rhode Island and received myriad awards. He’s the co-administrator of the New England Photography Guild, and an active contributor to Yankee Magazine‘s Fall Foliage and New England Photography groups on Facebook.

    Congratrulations Butch, you’ve assmbled an excellent body of work. I especially like the foggy fence photo , very nice soft feel but still plenty of color in it.

    Pat: Thank you…That shot has won 2 awards in juried shows and continues to be one of my all time favorites among all the shots I have taken. It was a rare opportunity and it was gone so quickly that on only got to take about 6 shots before it disappeared.

    Congratulations Butch. Bruce and I are long-time fans of your photography and still enjoy the 4 framed photos of the Warren area we acquired while we were back there a few years ago. Your work is a sweet reminder of Bruce’s growing-up years as well as the years that we lived in Warren with our children. One word sums up your work for us…..AWESOME!!!!!

    Thanks Bruce, Peggy, and Hali. I’ve met so many wonderful people since I started doing this including you 3. I love the joy it brings to former East Bay residents who get to take home a reminder of the great place we live in. Hali-I had the great pleasure of meeting you on a cold, blustery February afternoon.     These are spectacular photos. I was born & raised in Newport, lived in Middletown and am currently living in Providence and I can honestly say I’ve never had the privilege of seeing coastal RI with as much beauty as you have capured here. Thank you for reminding us that not everything in RI is about economic downturns or corrupt politicians!

    Joe…thanks very much for that wonderful compliment. I know that sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in all the distractions going on in the state. That’s why we need to be reminded that it is a beautiful place and worth preserving.

    Judy…thanks, yes Bristol is in the East Bay. The East Bay consists of East Providence, Riverside, Barrington, Warren, Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, Tiverton and Little Compton.

    Spectacular pictures, as we have come to expect from you! I saw an osprey on the hunt when we were on the Cape earlier this month, I definitely got my appreciation for the natural beauty of New England in general, and the East Bay in particular, from you. :-)
