Touring Vermont’s most rugged region doesn’t mean forgoing deluxe accommodations. Here are three of our favorite Northeast Kingdom hostelries:

Tram Haus Lodge
The spanking-new Tram Haus Lodge at Jay Peak Resort in the town of Jay stands at the base of the ski area’s famed aerial tram, which operates throughout foliage season and makes a moving picture out of the fall colors. All accommodations are studios or suites, with full kitchens and gas fireplaces; there’s also a spa on site. Rates include tram rides; some packages include golf. The Willoughvale Inn
The WilloughVale Inn & Cottages, on the shore of Lake Willoughby on Route 5A in Westmore, features spacious, comfortable rooms in its main building – a modern replica of a farmhouse that once took in guests here – or in fully equipped cottages (with fireplaces) on a hillside or at water’s edge. There’s cozy pub dining, and desserts are baked on the premises. Rates include continental breakfast and use of canoes and kayaks; motorboat rental is available. For details and pricing: 800-594-9102, 802-525-4123;

The Rabbit Hill Inn
The Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford is the Kingdom’s most luxurious place to stay, and one of the most elegant in Vermont. Most of the inn’s exquisitely furnished rooms have gas fireplaces; many have double spa tubs and porches or sun decks. Innkeeper Brian Mulcahy serves up generous drinks in the Snooty Fox Pub, where guests gather before heading to the dining room. There chef Michael Secich’s offerings might include seared scallops with red-onion confit and spinach, or smoked pheasant with blue polenta. Rates include a full candlelit breakfast.
