The waiting is over, and the judges have chosen the winner of Yankee Magazine‘s 2011 Winter Photo Contest. Congratulations to David Stone for taking the winning photograph of the Iced-In Canoe in Ipswich, MA!

We asked David to tell us the story behind the photograph:
“The Ipswich River is an easy walk from my house, and I often wander down there with camera in hand to see what it has to offer. The canoe had been there through the summer and fall, and in early December when the ice was forming in the river. The light was very nice on what was a very cold early December morning and I took 2 single shots of the canoe, one horizontal and one vertical. I liked the feel of the horizontal one better and processed it in Photoshop CS4 for the final image. I’m happy to say that the canoe was moved to the safety of the shore not too long after I photographed it and is resting comfortably.”

I know nothing of the art of photography, light, angle, subject. The artsy look. I do know this is a nice shot that makes me reflect on emotions feelings and memories. It also took me three tries of looking at it in differing sizes before I could figure out what in blazes it was a shot of. Only when I was reviewing the captions prior to the finals did I realize it was indeed a ice captured canoe…….none the less a wonderful photo to see again and remember fading memories of youth and row boats, canoes, swamps, pond and lake landings. Many a vessel seen years in the past in similar straits….sadly happy memories now………
