BEST STATE PARK:
Gillette Castle State Park, East Haddam

High above the banks of the Connecticut River, actor William Gillette (known for portraying Sherlock Holmes) built this quirky fieldstone fortress as a 24-room home with handcrafted locks and spy mirrors. BEST HISTORIC FERRY:
Rocky Hill/Glastonbury Ferry, Rocky Hill

BEST ARTY RETREAT:
WEIR FARM NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE, Wilton

BEST AQUARIUM EXPERIENCE:
MYSTIC AQUARIUM/SE RESEARCH FOUNDATION, Mystic

Join the animal-care team for seven hours as “Trainer for a Day.” Bonding with beluga whales begins with hip boots and hand signals. Then help teach California sea lions their show tricks.
