BEST HIDDEN-GEM B&B:
TAYLOR HOUSE, Boston

This stately Victorian in architecturally lovely Jamaica Plain feels worlds away from downtown hotels. It’s close to the neighborhood’s lush Arnold Arboretum, across the street from peaceful Jamaica Pond, and within easy walking distance of Jamaica Plain’s funky center with boutiques and restaurants. Rates: from $169 per night. 50 Burroughs St. 617-983-9334; taylorhouse.com

BEST UPDATE:
THE INTERCONTINENTAL, Boston

There’s the perennially prime waterfront location between downtown and the Seaport, and many new amenities. Adults will enjoy a refurbished spa with fitness classes; there’s also an expanded bar, RumBa, with an outdoor waterfront terrace. Families will appreciate a package with the nearby Boston’s Children Museum. Packages: from $360. Rooms: from $290. 510 Atlantic Ave. 617-747-1000; intercontinentalboston.com

BEST DOWNTOWN BOUTIQUE HOTEL:
MARRIOTT RESIDENCE INNDOWNTOWN/SEAPORT, Boston

Artist’s loft or chain hotel? Groovy jazz is piped into the foyer, mod green and orange furniture recalls a Mad Men set, and the warehouse exterior honors industrial Fort Point’s architectural history. For a touch of urban Zen, step into the atrium, strung with lights. Studio suites: from $229. 370 Congress St. 617-478-0840; marriott.com

BEST MAKEOVER:
THE BOXER, Boston

After a $3 million renovation, the former Bulfinch Hotel became The Boxer. The exterior mimics New York’s Flatiron building; thanks to the triangular shape, many rooms have panoramic views. The hotel has native touches; mini-fridges are stocked with local treats such as Cape Cod chips. The hotel’s restaurant, Finch, serves Boston staples. Pets welcome. Rates: from $249. 107 Merrimac St. 617-624-0202; theboxerboston.com

the motel per night price is unacceptable, if these prices are representative of average motel charges.
