Running in the Hot Summer Weather

Jogging and yogging

by Heather Atwell

The New England region experienced some hot and humid weather over the past couple days, until a storm came through last night and cooled temperatures. So what did I do to survive the warm temps? I went running.

It was wonderful. My route is short, just over 3 miles, and completely flat, no hills, just one foot in front of the other sort of deal. And, to be accurate, it is more of a "jog" rather than a "run" since my pace is never that brisk. There is something about calling what I do jogging that makes it sound so uncool and then, I have to say I went "yogging" today because jogging reminds me of Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy in Anchorman saying:

"Veronica and I are trying this new fad called, uh, jogging. I believe it's 'jogging' or 'yogging.' it might be a soft j. I'm not sure but apparently you just run for an extended period of time! It's supposed to be wild."

On Monday, about a mile from my endpoint, the endorphins kicked in, or I was hallucinating, but I think it was endorphins and just an early onset runner's high due to the heat. I haven't done a long run in a while, but a true runner's high, like the one I experienced the other day, usually hits me around mile 9. So, the heat accelerated the process, which is good.

By yesterday, when things got really hot, I still planned on going for a yog. But here is the thing: Heat and running I can take, but heat, running, and a steak and a beer an hour earlier are not manageable for me. As addicted as I was to my runner's high over the last few days in the balmy weather, this junky could not overcome what the Longhorn dealt me. Today, I am only eating veggies.

What do you do to beat the heat?
