Growing up in Springfield, MA in the '50's, 60's, and 70's my friends, neighbors, and co-workers were split about 50-50 between the Red Sox and Yankees. During my earliest years, I was a Yankee fan - mostly due to Mickey Mantle. But as I got older my loyalties changed and I became a true Sox fan. My Little Team was the OLSH (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) BOSOX. But the rivalry in Springfield didn't change. My friend and neighbor John was a Thurman Monson fan while I stuck with Carlton Fisk. We had some great arguements and John started calling me Pudge ! It was a shame that all ended with Thurman's untimely death. It was a great time to grow up and root for the Sox and against those other guys !
