About Us:Yankee Magazine was founded in 1935 and is based in Dublin, New Hampshire. It is the only magazine devoted to New England through its coverage of travel, home, food, and features. With a paid circulation of over 350,000 and a total audience of nearly 2.5 million, it is published by Yankee Publishing Incorporated (YPI), one of the few remaining family owned and independent magazine publishers in the United States. Jamie Trowbridge, president, Yankee Publishing Incorporated (YPI): As President/CEO of YPI, Jamie leads one of the few remaining independent magazine publishers in America, and follows his grandfather's founding mission to operate a thriving family-owned business. Prior to joining YPI in 1988, he held newspaper and magazine publishing positions in Boston and Seattle. YPI publishes Yankee Magazine and The Old Farmer's Almanac.
J.D. Hale, publisher of Yankee Magazine: J.D. oversees Yankee Publishing's sales and marketing team. Prior to joining Yankee, he worked for Time Inc.'s Life and People magazines before moving into corporate sales for Time Warner. J.D. is an avid skier and cyclist, with six finishes in the Pan Mass Challenge, which raises money for cancer research; one finish in Harpoon Breweries' B2B, a one-day race from South Boston, Massachusetts, to South Windsor, Vermont; and two finishes in the annual Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb, also known as the "world's toughest hillclimb," in New Hampshire. Born and raised in Dublin, New Hampshire, J.D. is the son of Jud Hale, Yankee's editor-in-chief, and the great-nephew of founders Robb and Beatrix Sagendorph.
Judson Hale, editor-in-chief of Yankee Magazine and The Old Farmer's Almanac: An editor at Yankee since 1958 and chairman of the board of Yankee Publishing since 2003, Jud's wit and wisdom have established him as a beloved New England icon and expert. He has appeared nationally on Good Morning America, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and Larry King Live. He has written two books about New England: Inside New England and The Education of a Yankee. His latest book, Discovering Our Faraway Brother, is about his autistic older sibling. Mel Allen, editor of Yankee Magazine: Mel is the fifth editor of Yankee Magazine since its beginning in 1935. His career at Yankee spans nearly three decades, during which he has edited and written for every section of the magazine, including home, food, and travel. In his pursuit of stories, he has raced a sled dog team, crawled into the dens of black bears, fished with the legendary Ted Williams, picked potatoes in Aroostook Country, and stood beneath a battleship before it was launched. Mel teaches magazine writing at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and is author of A Coach's Letter to His Son. His column, "Here in New England," was 2009 National City and Regional Magazine Awards Finalist for the category "Column."
Eileen T. Terrill, managing editor of Yankee Magazine: Eileen is a lifelong New Englander and has been with Yankee for five years. She is the magazine's primary fact-checker, copy-edits all material, and serves as a liaison among the editorial, art, and production departments. Before coming to Yankee, she was an editor of consumer and trade high-tech publications. A former biology teacher and psychiatric social worker, she has also edited and written for middle-school history and world cultures magazines.
Polly Bannister, senior editor, home and garden, of Yankee Magazine: Polly has been a Yankee editor and a favorite of readers for more than 20 years. She brings a deep appreciation of architecture, furnishings, design, antiques, fine art, crafts, and cooking to her work. Throughout her travels she has cultivated an extensive network of inside sources, including craftsmen and other experts, who help her discover the practical information and inspiring features that make homes in New England unique. Polly has also edited two cookbooks and four travel books. She is continually inspired by New England's beautiful and diverse landscape -- from cranberry bogs, sandy beaches, and granite-topped mountains to thriving cities, white clapboard houses on village greens, and red-brick mill towns.
Annie B. Copps, senior editor, food, of Yankee Magazine: Annie oversees the magazine's food coverage, both as an editor and as a contributor of feature stories and columns. Prior to joining Yankee, she served as food editor of Boston Magazine and features editor of Concierge and was also widely known for her work as the host of WBZ radio's Connoisseurs' Corner and WTKK's Table Talk with Annie Copps. As a television producer, she made her mark with two popular PBS series, Cooking with Todd English and Julia Child's Kitchen -- where she was an assistant to the legendary grande dame of French cuisine. She appears frequently as a guest on NBC's Today show and other TV and radio shows. Before beginning her media career, Annie honed her skills as a cook at several notable Boston-area restaurants, including Olives, Jasper's, The Harvest, and Michela's. She also writes Eating New England, a blog about New England food.
Heather Marcus, photo editor of Yankee Magazine: Heather has been with Yankee since 1999. She works closely with a large group of contributing photographers, assigning stories as well as developing new talent for the magazine. One of her favorite photo essays that appeared in the magazine is Alexandra De Steiguer's work on the Isles of Shoals. Her initial passion for the medium came from a high school course in black-and-white photography, which led her later to teach photography basics to young students during college. She has a bachelor's degree in anthropology from Drew University. She grew up in New Hampshire and has a great appreciation for the people and landscape of New England. She is continually amazed at the great visual opportunities the region affords.
Barbara Hall, Web editor of Yankee Magazine: Barbara manages content for Yankee Magazine's Web sites, YankeeMagazine.com and YankeeFoliage.com. In 2009, YankeeMagazine.com was a National City and Regional Magazine Awards Finalist in two categories, including "Multimedia Extension," and "Excellence Online." In 2008 the Web site won a silver award for "Excellence Online." In addition, she oversees Yankee's e-newsletters and podcasts. With a master's degree in Internet management, she has taught Internet marketing at Keene State College and provided Web content for small businesses and nonprofits. Previously, she was a writer/editor at Northfield Mount Hermon School, Keene State College, and the Keene Sentinel.
Lori Pedrick, art director of Yankee Magazine: Lori oversees all visual aspects and elements of the editorial pages in Yankee Magazine, including photography, illustration, and art production. Before joining Yankee, she was art director for MetroCorp Publishing, publisher of Philadelphia Magazine, Boston Magazine, and other niche publications, where she was responsible for developing and directing design, photography, and visual content. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Moore College of Art & Design, where she studied illustration, graphic design, and photography.
Justin Shatwell, associate editor of Yankee Magazine: Justin was raised in Louisiana and moved to New England for graduate school. He brings his strong background in history and a passion for preserving New England's historic treasures to Yankee Magazine. In addition to writing feature articles and working on the magazine's up-front "First Light" section, he produces online videos for YankeeMagazine.com.
Ian Aldrich, editor-at-large of Yankee Magazine: Ian, a native New Englander who has worked and freelanced for Yankee for the past decade, writes feature stories, home pieces, and helps manage the magazine's up-front section, First Light. His stories have ranged from exploring the community impact from a church poisoning in a small town in northern Maine to dissecting the difficulties facing Nantucket around its problems with erosion. In addition to his connection to Yankee, Ian worked as a senior editor of Cincinnati Magazine for several years.
Heather Atwell, communications manager of Yankee Magazine: Heather writes the New England Ski and Outdoor Adventure Blog throughout the year at YankeeMagazine.com. She also oversees the magazine's public relations efforts.
