Monadnock Region Featured as Fall Getaway

by Heather Atwell

Dublin, New Hampshire--Yankee Magazine features its very own backyard, the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, in the September/October issue's fall foliage travel story. The article highlights the region and lists editors' favorite places for dining, shopping, and lodging. Never before in its history has Yankee covered the area as extensively.

"We've invited Yankee readers into our home country, New Hampshire's beautiful Monadnock region, where we work and live," says editor Mel Allen. "Forty towns and villages--including one small city of 22,000--claim kinship with Monadnock, and within them there are more streams, lakes, ponds, waterfalls, and tree-lined back roads connecting with other tree-lined back roads than you can see in months of touring around. I've lived here 30 years, and I still come upon hidden beauty and curiosities I never knew."

The centerpiece of the region, Mt. Monadnock, just 65 miles from Boston, is climbed by nearly 125,000 hikers each year. On clear days, it offers a panoramic view of all six New England states. Other outdoor diversions listed in the article include: Cathedral of the Pines, Frye's Measure Mill, Miller State Park/Pack Monadnock, Monadnock State Park, Pisgah State Park, and Shieling Forest.

The following establishments are also recommended by Yankee's editors:

Dining: Acqua Bistro (Peterborough); Alyson's Orchard (Walpole); Brown House Bakery (Harrisville); Dublin General Store (Dublin); Fiddleheads (Hancock); Harlow's Pub (Peterborough); Harrisville General Store (Harrisville); Luca's Mediterranean Café (Keene); Nicola's Trattoria (Keene); Pearl Restaurant & Oyster Bar (Peterborough).

Shopping: The Black Swan (Peterborough); Cross Road (Peterborough); Red Chair (Peterborough); Sharon Art Center (Peterborough); Toadstool Bookshop (Peterborough, Keene, and Milford); Harrisville Designs (Harrisville); Ruggles & Hunt (Walpole).

Lodging: Applegate B&B (Peterborough); The Birchwood Inn (Temple); E. F. Lane Hotel (Keene); The Grand View Inn & Resort (Jaffrey); The Hancock Inn (Hancock); Stepping Stones B&B (Wilton Center); Three Maples B&B (Sharon).

In each issue, Yankee Magazine highlights a special curiosity unique to the six-state region in the column "Only In New England." The September/October issue features a favorite fall destination in the Monadnock region, Yankee Siege, in Greenfield, New Hampshire, where a 55-foot trebuchet launches pumpkins through the air a third of a mile. Owners Steve and Kathy Seigars launched the first pumpkin in 2000 to generate more business for their farm stand, Yankee Farmer. Yankee Siege operates, weather permitting, Saturdays and Sundays, from September 20 to October 26, 1?5 p.m. For more information, visit: YankeeMagazine.com
