Yankee Magazine, September/October 2008 Issue, on Newsstands August 26

by Heather Atwell

Feature stories: "Our Own Magic Mountain" -- by Yankee Magazine's editors, photographed by Sara Gray (page 42): Yankee Magazine features its very own backyard, the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, in the September/October issue's fall foliage travel story. The article highlights the region and lists editors' favorite places for dining, shopping, and lodging. Never before in its history has Yankee covered the area as extensively.

"Occasion: A Day to Call Our Own" -- by Janelle Randazza, photographed by Reena Bammi (page 98): A Gloucester, Mass., family celebrates its annual winemaking tradition.

"Haunted Places" -- by Mel Allen, with excerpts from Ghost Hunters of New England by Alan Brown, photographed by Lisa Sacco (page 102): New England's ghost hunters visit two haunted locations.

"The Big Question" -- by contributor Ian Aldrich, photographed by Matt Kalinowski (page 106): Barry Clifford, who found the remains of a 28-gun pirate ship called the Whydah, answers the big question: "What does it mean to be an explorer?" regarding his quest for historical treasure.

"A Fierce Yellow Light" -- by Cindy Thames, illustrated by Allen Garns (page 108): Although the Norway Maple is an invasive species, Thomas defends the tree that she believes lends grace and beauty in her own yard.

"A Disappearing Island" -- by contributor Ian Aldrich, photographed by Dana Smith (page 110): Aldrich examines Nantucket's battle against erosion, which pits summer homeowners against year-round residents.

The Guide: The Travel section explores the town of Old Wethersfield, the largest historic district in Connecticut, and Rhode Island's warm September waters. The Home section offers information from expert paintmakers on how to re-create New England's classic hues; a selection of rich furnishings for work or study; directions to craft an autumn-themed serving tray; details on how to set up an outdoor wood-fired oven; a look back on the role of mourning pictures; and tips for fall gardening. The Food section features root-vegetable recipes; a blue-ribbon winner's tips for pickling; the best butternut squash; and an easy way to roast pumpkin seeds.
