Yankee Magazine, November/December 2008 Issue

Inside the issue

by Heather Atwell

DUBLIN, New Hampshire (Oct 30, 2008)--Yankee Magazine's November/December issue celebrates the season with both new and old traditions. From an improved version of the classic fruitcake to updated takes on a turkey dinner, plus ways to start new holiday family rituals like an annual hunt for the perfect tree, Yankee, published since 1935, knows a thing or two about adding new twists to time honored practices.

Inside the Issue

Feature stories:

"Angels Among Us" -- by Carol Cambo, photographed by Matt Kalinowski (page 102): This story features four New Englanders who have made a significant difference in the lives of others. The people profiled in "Angels Among Us" are Pauline Alighieri who founded Friends of Mel, which has raised more than $4 million to date to fund cancer research, as well as education and support for cancer patients and their caregivers; Eighteen year-old Brendan Gobell, who has volunteered at a homeless shelter where he, along with his mother and his sister, has made dinner for 120 people every other month for the past six years and raised $1,120 for the shelter from a miniature golf tournament he organized for his senior year project; Deborah Descenza who founded the non-profit Farmsteads of New England, which provides residential, vocational and recreational needs for people who have autism and other developmental disabilities; and Linda Gilbert & Friends who founded the Hands to Honduras program which provides educational, technical, cultural, and humanitarian assistance to the Atlántida coastal region.

Occasion: One Enchanted Evening" -- by Annie Graves, photographed by Sadie Dayton (page 96): Boston Ballet's timeless Nutcracker is one of the most memorable events of the season.

"A Place of Unsettling Authenticity -- by Justin Shatwell, photographed by Christian Kozowyk(page 106): Plimoth Plantation takes you into the heart of our history as a nation.

"The Big Question" -- by contributor Ian Aldrich, photographed by Carl Tremblay (page 114): PBS host Tom Silva tells you how to make your old house energy efficient while staying true to its character.

"The Mystery of Dogtown" -- by Cindy Anderson, photographed by Sara Gray (page 118): Yankee plumbs the secrets of New England's most famous abandoned settlement.

The Guide:

The Travel section explores Chester, Grafton and Woodstock, Vermont for their magical holiday celebrations. "O Little Towns of Vermont," written by Christina Tree, an award-winning, New England-based travel writer and author explores the virtues of these small communities. She highlights some of the attractions, lodging, food and shopping in the area.

The Home section shows the artist Gretchen Dow Simpson's house decked out for the holidays; shares ideas to fill a basket with made in New England goodies; offers tips for gifts that are high on seasonal style and easy on the budget; and explains why antique and vintage board games are now prized collectibles.

The Food section features Food Editor Annie B. Copps' no-fuss tips and recipes to roast the perfect bird with all the trimmings; and gives a recipe for a great pie crust in "Easy Does It."

Departments: "Here in New England" -- by Steve Kemper, photographed by Julie Bidwell (page 18): Explore the heart of witch hazel country, and meet some local families from Connecticut who have spent most of their lives brush cutting the medicinal plant as a part-time and seasonal livelihood. Witch hazel is a product used in beauty and health items such as lotions, gels, moisturizers, cleansers, conditioners, and shampoos.

"5 Best Bookstores" -- by Suzanne Strempek Shea (page 32): Shea, who has written five novels and three memoirs (all published by Boston-based Beacon Press), including Shelf Life, about her year working at a local independent bookstore in Western Massachusetts, compiled the list for Yankee Magazine. She's read her work at dozens of bookshops around New England.

"First Light" -- by Jim Collins (page 22): With the holiday season approaching, families will embark on their search for the perfect Christmas tree. In "Bringing in the Tree," Yankee Magazine's contributing editor Jim Collins describes his family's now ten-year old tradition.

"Part of the ritual is getting there," writes Collins. "We drive the back way on a series of marked and unmarked dirt roads, which gives the trip a kind of over-the-river-and-through-the-woods feeling."
