2011 Spring Photo Contest Finalists
We received a great response to our first-ever spring photo contest! After serious deliberation, we've narrowed it down to five images that stand out from the rest. Here are the judges' comments on why these five photos made it into the finals.
Spring Flowers by Kristin Burchsted
The unexpected focus in this composition caught our attention right away. Not showing the traditional, expected angle makes the shot more graphic, bold and colorful.
Old Orchard Pier by Moe Chen
We are definitely suckers for black and white photos (2 made the surprising cut for our spring contest), and we love the composition of this shot. Utilizing a long exposure gives this shot a dreamy fine art quality. It doesn't portray spring in the conventional way, but it does make us think of the upcoming beach season and the promise of what summer on the boardwalk holds.
Salty at the Nantucket Daffodil Festival by Charlotte Carey Photography
We love the composition of the classic splash of Nantucket red pants on the right as well as the red dog leash winding through the frame. And who can resist a puppy?
At the Dock by Jessica Vescera
We were drawn to the artistic touches that give this digital image a hand printed quality. Here in New England, we know that melting ice and mud are as much a part of spring as flower buds and baby birds.
The Reading Bench by David Stone
This feels like a breath of fresh spring air. The architectural element of the bench surrounded by spring blooms is a nice addition in terms of visual interest and composition.
We would like to congratulate the finalists and thank all who entered the spring photo contest. For another chance to have your photo published in Yankee Magazine, enter our "Summer Photo Contest"!

Salt of the earth photo!!! Super cute little guy and the \'reds\' look distinctly anchored in a New England. And his paws are HUGE!!!!
Great photo!

Salty loves Yankee Magazine and so does his mom - always referring to it as we share adventures traveling in New England. The puppy face, bean boots, Nantucket reds and dock on the water are a true New England sight!

Salty Dog is my favorite.
Comment from Diane Le-Farnham on June 18, 2011
The Reading Bench makes me want to grab my favorite book and jump into the photo and sit down and read while smelling the fresh blossoms under the tree and enjoying all the wonderful signs of spring. The small bunch of colored flowers in the background makes you wonder what other beautiful colors and blooms one would see while sitting under that tree. That bench is calling your name to come and sit and enjoy nature\'s beauty even if you don\'t want to read.
Comment from Anne Stearns on June 18, 2011
My vote is for Salty..nothing says New England like a golden and Nantucket Reds!! From the L.L. Bean boots to the cobblestones on Nantucket..this picture is a sure winner!!
Comment from Juliana Pecchia on June 18, 2011
Have to go with a puppy on the cover...what could be more fitting? And, with a name like Salty, it was just meant to be!
Comment from Barbara Maggiacomo on June 20, 2011
The reading bench gets my vote.

Salty Dog in my opinion. Absolutely depicts New England life.
Comment from Berta Eddy on June 27, 2011
I really like Old Orchard Pier, but I think Spring Flowers is a better representation of Spring.
Comment from Joan Jellison on July 5, 2011
David Stone has my vote with the blossoming tree altho the bench looks out of place to me. Just give me a blanket and the latest Yankee magazine.
Comment from Patricia Rand on July 5, 2011
Salty,what a true picture !
Comment from Margie Orr on July 5, 2011
Love the reading bench. I want to be there.
Comment from Deborah Damon on July 5, 2011
Old Orchard Pier - fantastic picture-the black and white really makes the picture! Great contrast and sharpness.
Comment from Pat Kissane on July 6, 2011
Comment from Robert Donofrio on July 7, 2011
Moe Chen. A non conventional representation which makes it unique. Draws viewer into photo. While the macro flower is well done it is a typical and over done photo. I love goldens (Salty) but doesn\'t represent \"spring\" like a photograph is able to do. The dock captures that transition time when air is becoming warmer and ice and snow are melting. The light in spring is like no other time of the year.
Comment from vanessa Boulier on July 7, 2011
Love the bench!
Comment from Steven Rayhill on July 7, 2011
At the Dock by Jessica just keeps drawing me in. I hike frequently and this pic captures spring in New England like no other. For me it is the mud that I complain about while walking in the spring but what I wished for all winter, especially the one we just had. Wooded wetlands that is NE we are so lucky. Thanks for capturing it nice work.
Comment from Kristin Burchsted on July 11, 2011
My comment is for Robert Donofrio: I am the photographer of the \"Spring Flower\". I assume when you say my photo is over done, you are suggesting my photo is Photoshopped or that I used some other plug in to play with the colors of the photo. I am a straight photographer. I photograph in raw and only use basic adjustments to process my work. This photo was taken on a wet, foggy, rainy day. A perfect time for taking pictures of flowers and capturing their true beautiful color.
Comment from Wanda Lubinski on July 18, 2011
the flower is a spectacular shot but just doesn\'t say new england to me. i\'ve gotta go with salty too
