I would have voted for the stuffing, but I consider it part of the main course, not a side dish. I could actually have it for the main course and skip the turkey!

My family would disown me if we didn't have mashed potatoes. I don't blame them. My son, a chef, makes them with cream cheese, butter, a little cream and fresh rosemary.

The Cranberry Sauce -- can't eat roasted turkey dinner without it!

, Butternut Squash, then mashed potatoes, then stuffing, then cranberry sauce. Actually I want it all. It's the one day of the year when I refuse to consider the calories, percent fat or anything else. I have a little bit of everything including dessert and I'm set for the year.

Mashed potatoes and Turkey Gravy is an absolute Must-Have for Thanksgiving.

my favorite is a salad that has been in our family for 2 generations. we call it Christmas salad.. Made up of crushed cranberries, marshmallows, crushed pineapple, toasted pecans, and lots of whip cream...it is an overnight salad to die for...

I would have checked, "All of the above" if I could have. Along with gravy I have to have every thing listed there on my Holiday table. What's turkey without the cranberry sauce or stuffing? I love butternut squash with just butter, salt & pepper and mashed potatoes are a "given". And any kind of dessert is fine with me ... but I might not have room until later.

Thanksgiving dinner without the cranberries is, I think, illegal. Or should be.
Comment from Kathleen Fay on November 19, 2009
I agree that stuffing, and gravy, are a part of the guest of honor, aka mr turkey. So that homemade cranberry sauce, that alerts your taste buds, is a must as a side.
Comment from Elaine Monsen on November 19, 2009
We actually call the mashed potatoes "whipees" because they are whipped at a high speed, adding finely minced onion, butter, grated cheese, milk, salt & pepper. As there are always leftovers, there are never, never any "whipees" leftover at all. This is the same recipe I use to top my Shepard's Pie. The "whipees" have become a family favorite. YUM!!
