My husband and I moved to Keene NH in June of 07 thinking we'd finally found our perfect NE town.. Boy were we wrong.. Aside from the people being cold and rude they were nosy and the town just honestly had nothing to offer but drunk college kids. We lasted 11 months and hightailed it back to Florida. I LOVE NE and my husband lived his entire life in Northern Maine and I don't want that to be my only memory of New England I know there are wondeful towns out there. I think Keene was too small for us (we come from Naples Fl a town of well over 3-400,000 people) ..

We always loved Danvers Mass but I think its a bit expensive for us. We're in our late 20's and don't need a party scene. Safety is an issue with my husbands line of work and our child My husband is a police officer and I'm a stay at home mom but always willing to jump right back into work if necessary...

I think Mass is our best choice being its just more populated but I'm open for suggestions. Portsmouth NH was another great town we loved. We'd like to say a bit closer to the coast that winter in Keene was ROUGH out there so no western mass. So any suggestions would be fantastic.. Our daughter would be between 4-5 when we would plan to start looking. So could you suggest a place to maybe consider for us.. Nothing too expensive and nicely populated so we don't feel like the center of attention when we get to town

Thanks!!!1

Hello, My father use to take us to Vermont when I was a child for skiing trips and have not been back since age 15.
Can someone refer my wife and I to a quaint little Village for a Christmas get away? A place that has great shops and very quiet Bed & Breakfast's. A place that just means Christmas town!! We don't have to be totally secluded but a B&B that has fire places in every room and possibly a cozy Hot tub.

Hello -

Could anyone tell me where in New England (preferrably Connecticut or Massachusetts) it snows the LEAST? This might seem like an odd question, but let me explain...

I have wanted to live in NE ever since I first visited about 15 years ago...and now is the time for me to finally do it! My only problem is that I am disabled and walk with crutches...I am very amubulatory and drive etc. etc....but I am worried about what it is going to be like to get around during the winter. Here in PA we are horrible about clearing snow, so winters can be a nightmare.

I hear that Southern Connecticut doesn't get any more snow than PA...I am also very interested in South Coast MA...what is it like there?

And are roads and sidewalks cleared quickly and well?

Any info would be greatly appreciated...I am planning on moving in the next 4 - 8 months.

Thank you!!!

Hello!

My husband and I have been talking seriously about making the move from the West to East coast. We spent two weeks in '04 traveling all over the New England area for our Honeymoon and decided that NH was the state of choice.

Looking at things right now it'll be a couple years off till this happens. Hopefully within the next 5 years though. We want to keep ourselves up to date on where to look and go for info.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Website suggestions for realty and state info. Info on just general, and not so general, things you'd tell us since you're someone who's already living there in these states or area. I know that the East Coast is a place that many go to retire and my husband and I are still in our late 20's. We don't want to live in big city life. Just a nice old town that has easy access to get to a big city so we can have the best of both worlds in a sense.

Also for those of you who are suspicious of outsiders, as I've read it suggested on these forums before, I am a native. I was born in Conneticut, as were my parents, but my parents left for the West Coast when I was little. So I'll be returning to my homeland in a sense. ; )

Also my husband and I own our own business and run it partly from our home. Creating websites, art reproduction for artists, commercials and various media and the like. I know that when we talked to some of the B&B owners when we visted in '04 they said that the job market back there was not very good. How do you think a business like ours would fare over there do you think?

Any and all help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

-

This is my first post here. My husband and I currently live in MD, and wish to move nearer to my aging parents and other family in Cape Cod. Right now we have about an 11 hour drive to get there.
We are considering several places, but haven't nailed it down yet.
Like the Nashua, NH area, but RI would be closer. We'd like similar neighborhood situation to where we are now. Homes are about 15-20 years old, middle class, nicely kept. I am a Hospice RN and my husband is in information systems, specfically a help desk analyst for a contractor on a Navy base.
We will be retiring in a few years (probably 8).
Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated. I did look at the other thread about retiring to New England, but those areas mentioned are a bit further than we want to be.
My husband is building an airplane and we want to be located near an airport - the one in Nashua is good, but smaller would be ok too.
Thanks,

In Jan. 2005 my wife and I took an exploratory trip around New England. We stayed in a variety of BnBs so we could talk to Innkeepers about their experiences and way of life.
Although everywhere had a lot to offer we both fell in love with Maine.
As we would be moving from England we would appreciate any response from anyone who is an expatriate but any experiences or thoughts from New Englanders would also be very welcome and make interesting reading ~ thank you.

New Englanders mistrusting of outsiders? (4 replies)

On this website

a person who has been living in Keene for over 12 years describes his experiences with being integrated (or lack thereof) into the community. He says he has been there for over 12 years and doesn't know his neighbors names nor do they know his. He goes on to further generalize New Englanders as "mistrusting" of outsiders. And, they are private and cautious...

I have read about this general attitude of New Englanders as being "private" or "cautious" or "initially shy" etc. My point of writing this thread is not to get into another debate about what this general attitude is or where it comes from...

I have never lived in New England, though I am seriously consider moving there. I have only visited there, but I can definitely say that I love the pace of life. I love the natural beauty. I love the architecture. I love the culture.

What concerns me are stories I have heard, like the one I cited above, of people who have moved to NE, and have lived there for quite some time, but are not quite accepted by the community, and are perpetual outsiders. I do not want to have lived in an area for over 12 years and not know my neighbors names, nor them not knowing mine. I want to be part of a community. I want to have kinship with my fellow persons.

Are my concerns unfounded? How accepted are outsiders, particularly in small-towns such as Keene? Thank you for taking the time to read this and replying.

Located on the Upper Reach of Narraganssett Bay, my home is spectacularly located on a rich combinatio of Bay and tidal flats. The wildlife is wonderful, the views are the "best" in R.I. The house faces west, with the riches sunsets one can imagine. It is a year-round cottage, with 3-bedrooms, 10-years old, all fresh and comfortable. It is air-conditioned, although the breezes off the Bay are pleasures to enjoy. The Mahogany deck allows outdoor living all summer season long.

I am interested in properties, either on the coast or not, in Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont. We will exchange properties for like-value or will certainly consider property less or higher in value.

- Areas with the small town atmosphere but city amenities?
- Dog friendly cities?
- New housing communities?

My main hope (no pun intended) is to live in a place where people are friendly and courteous...cashiers say hi instead of grumbling at you, driving is leisurly and not a mad race to the stop light.

I'd also like an area that has some land (1-2 acres) but isn't a hike into town and still has the warmer temps of the coast.

Thanks guys!

This infamous birthday is not until Dec 18 but needed to get some planning done for it. We wanted something different this time - definitely not a cruise.

We are scheduling around 2 weeks - and I want to be where there is SNOW! Where would snow be in the forecast (approx Dec 1 - 18)? I've always dreamed of walking throught the pristine snow on snowskies, with the storybook cottage/inn waiting in the (near) distance with a fire and some toddies. Sigh.

Ok, I guess I better make my dreams come true, as this particular birthday is making me aware that our wonderful travel days won't last forever.

Where would you suggest? We enjoy walking, music, nature, theatre, books, people, discussions, laughter - and we are foodies and have met very few wines that we didn't enjoy!

Thanks for any help.

Hi Guys,

My husband and I travelled the coast of ME last year and absolutely LOVED it, so much in fact that we are seriously contemplating moving there (portland area)

However, I am concerned about the climate. We were there in July and it couldn't have been better (warm/sunny)....but what's the REAL weather like? Are the winters there really as bad as you'd think? (if so, is it worth it?) Does it still snow in May? How often does it rain? Do the summers get warm?etc. I've checked the weather channel and such sites, but I'm looking for a local's point of view.
Thanks!

Good afternoon. My fiance and I are planning to spend two months this summer in a quintessential, charming New England small town. We're looking for a town that is not crowded with summer tourists, rather filled with year-long residents. Being near water would be a bonus. We're hoping to rent a small home or cottage in a quiet setting within walking/biking distance of a small downtown or Main Street. I write a freelance column, called Traffic Jam which chronicles my city-girl goes country adventures, for a Chicago-based website and plan on writing about my New England experiences. We've started researching towns in Vermont, Rhode Island and Maine. However, we're open to any insightful suggestions. Thank you!!

Hello to all. After a long talk my family and I have started researching a move to NH or Maine (within 100 miles of Boston)and were curious about the employment options in the area. The only company I have worked for is relocating. We decided not to go out west with them. Fortunately those not going will be given an early retirement packages ( not enough to survive on). This is a big step for us since our children are in middle school and we are both 50. My wife and I still want/need to work but are not sure about joining the corporate world again. It seems there is quite a lot of people who are self employed living in those areas. If one was not self employed could they still find work in the larger cities or do many commute to Mass? I was curious on how most make a living? We thought about staying in the Tri-state area but decided we want a fresh start and would sacrifice less income for where we want to live. Thans for any/all information.

Hello! I have been reading the posts on this forum and find them to be quite informative, thanks! I do have some other questions that I didn't see any answers to so far, though. So here's my story:

My husband and I are looking to move to NE in 2 years' time. We are currently living in Iowa (where he is in chiropractic school) and are counting the days till we can get back to the east coast! I grew up on Northern Virginia 30 min from DC. He grew up in Michigan but loves the east coast as much as I do. We're looking at NE for the intellectual/political nature of the area, as well as the ACTUAL nature (trees, water, etc.). We are in our late 20s and have no kids yet, but plan to start a family in a few years. I am a school speech therapist, and hope to get a job with the school system wherever we end up. So good schools are important for me as well as our (future) children.

Here's the slightly complicated part: my parents, with whom my husband and I both get along quite well, will most likely be making the move to NE with us. My father works at home, though he travels internationally (to Europe) quite frequently and needs to be close to an airport. Our family has been spoiled by living less than 15 minutes from Dulles International Airport in Virginia, but less than an hour drive would work, I'm sure.

We'd love to live in a small(er) town that has a sense of community and history, yet be close enough to larger shopping/cultural areas as well. And, of course, there's the airport thing. Some place with reasonably housing costs would be great. We have two dogs and would love to have a place with a large yard for them to play in. We'd like to either find a cool older house, or maybe buy land to build on, even. Not really sure about that department, yet...I guess we need to find a locale before we start house-hunting! My parents will probably be looking for a smaller place with space for a garden. Being near water is preferable, whether it be a lake or the sea, either is fine. We love to swim, and my husband and I scuba dive as well.

So does any place fit the bill? Basically the airport thing is the most problematic thing I've come across, as I really don't know the area too well and don't have a good concept of how long it takes to get places. We, of course, plan to visit and drive around before we move, but I'd like to get some ideas early so I can research! Thanks in advance for the help!

I am a single guy looking for a nice town in New england which is alive yet not crazy like the current city I live in, lol. I want that old New England charm in a town but also a town which has a very good nightlife as I am heavily into going out on weekends to see live music: jazz, old style singers, blues, etc. I might add I am a novice trumpet player so town which have a good nightlife for such a thing would be great. As far as the place to live I would not need anything big, perhaps a one bedrrom apratment or a townhouse rental or house rental. Living near the coast would be cool if practical.

Hello All:

My husband and I are in our mid-late fifties, active, and beginning to think about retirement in New England. We are hoping you interesting folks on this board can help us!

We have spent much, much time in the northeastern part of Mass,(Athol/Orange) and over 20 years vacationing in Eastham, Cape Cod. We find ourselves interested in New Hampshire (especially), Vermont or Maine to retire to.

Our ideal? A small town, or just outside of one. Small 2 bedroom, quaint, older house, nice size property, but not huge. Not in the middle of the woods, but still rural. Friendly folks. NOT a retirement community.

We are planning a week in NH and VT in October, to roam around and get the feel of the area. Looking for perhaps a base for a few days in each state that we can branch out from. I keep hearing Meredith, New London, and Plymouth in New Hampshire. Woodstock, Brandon in Vermont.

Would love some opinions, suggestions. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello all!!

As you may know from my previous post, my partner and I are looking to move to New England (not too sure where, hopefully our great trip in September will help us decide!)

Our main problem is always going to be getting a visa, and we are looking at numerous ways to make our dreams come true and make the move. One thing we discussed at the weekend was perhaps buying a property, in the hope that this will not only go in our favor when applying for a visa (in 2-3yrs time), but also that it will help the process when we do move, and will be a great start in integrating into the local community.

We would have approx $138,000 for a deposit, and could afford up to $455,000 for a property (if we can get a mortgage). As I said, we are not too sure where exactly we would want to move to - I am 27 and my partner is 35, we have no children (unless you count two cats!) and would want to move somewhere not too big, with a nice community atmosphere, and hopefully plenty of restaurants and places to go in the evening for when we first move and have no friends!

The 'master plan' would be to buy this year (or the beginning of next), and as we would only be able to come over for 5/6 weeks a year, rent it out for the rest of the time, so we would need someone local to manage this for us. This means that we would also need to look at buying somewhere reasonably popular for vacation rentals.

If anyone has any ideas how we should go about this, where we should look, how possible it is, and how easy it is to rent out properties, I would be really grateful for any advice!

Many thanks

Wendy

46, divorced, two kids, not much money, but a deep-seated need to go back to New England and be happy, and to find a way to go back to school for a BFA and probably an MFA in studio art.

I grew up in Roxbury CT (Litchfield County) and think about going back to that region because I trust the public school and it's home to me. Any input on rents? Art programs? Employment?

My son (13) is very bright but has learning difficulties...who pays for special ed in the States now?

I am also a bit frightened by what I hear about the healthcare system. How do people pay for medical costs now?

I have a fair bit of writing experience (freelance journalism, writing jobs) and am good at French (I'm a translator and interpreter, after my BA in English lit from NYU I got BA equivalents from the Sorbonne in teaching French and in French lit). I have a French business school diploma. I did a lot of teaching of English as a foreign language. Can I find work?

Do deals exist whereby one can get art diplomas while working?

And I wonder about moving to Vermont instead of CT, as I have a shot at getting work through a friend and I understand it would be cheaper. But are the schools good? Is there a good network of intellectual and cultural activity? Is there an art program up there in my price range (low)?

Any input would be GRATEFULLY welcomed. Planning to make the big move in summer 2006.
