Well Halloween is over and we went back up to our sisters house on Sunday to clean out the shed and pick up the tombstones and monster pieces.
I'm getting old because it's so much harder to take it all back down into the dungeon than it was to get it out...

I'm hoping everyone will post their pictures in the **NEW*** Halloween reader photo gallery. I'll be posting some up there in a little while. Meanwhile I have a bunch here [photo.vistaphotography.com] and this is open to all.

Please share what you have for Halloween and if enough people want to talk about Halloween I'll create a permanent thread for Halloween...

We have decided last minute to drive up this weekend to New England and need advice on picking one area to enjoy the fall foliage. Last fall my husband & I visited CT during the fall season and loved it!

We will have a full day on 10/10 and half day on 10/11. We would like to pick one place to drive around and see the scenic roads, fall leaves, bridges, little towns, apple orchards, etc. Based on peak foliage, which area would one recommend: Vermont or New Hampshire? My husband was thinking we should pick Rhode Island and/or Massachusetts but looking at the foliage map, it seems too early to go to these areas this upcoming weekend. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mandy

Hi,
I know there are some other threads where I can gather some good information along these lines, and I fully intend to read through them, but given the fact that my time in the area is going to be relatively short I thought it might be worth asking for some pretty specific input. I am bringing my mother up to the area to enjoy the foliage, arriving in Albany the afternoon of 10/13 and then heading to our base for the trip, the Wyndham Bentley Brook outside of Hancock, MA. We really only have two full days to explore, the 14th and 15th and while my mom gets around pretty well, we won't be doing any hiking or anything like that. My initial thoughts are to do some of the scenic drives in western MA, while trying to sneak up to VT and NH for a bit on Wednesday; then possibly go down into CT on Thursday and take a ride on the Essex Steam Train/Becky Thatcher Riverboat, enjoying the scenery along the way.

I would really like to make the most of the time we have there. And I think my mom would enjoy visiting several states that she has never been to, in addition to taking in the scenery. I would really appreciate any thoughts you might have on these plans, and welcome alternatives.

Thanks,

If you keep up with Jeff Folger's blog some of you may have read the article about my trip last year and the 7600 miles I covered in 10 days. One thing I wish I had last year was up to the hour foliage updates from those who were out chasing peak. This year I have opened a Twitter account and I will be posting all my color findings multiple times throughout the day. I plan to arrive in New England either this weekend, or early next week depending on when the color is ready. I am from Southern California. For those who would like to follow my reports on Twitter, please add me at www.twitter.com/paper_giraffe . Have a fun foliage season and share some pictures when you all get home. I will be doing the same on a website which I will post here.

Hi,

My husband and I are traveling to New England to view the spectacular fall foliage, around Columbus day weekend. We are flying in to Boston airport late night of Oct 8th, and planning to rent a car and drive around NH/VT/Maine starting Oct 9th. We are already so excited about this trip, more so as this is our first visit to New England! I've been trying to do some research, reading the posts and come up with some sort of itinerary, but everyone seems to have different itineraries and there are so many beautiful places that I am just not able to pick up a few for our 4 day trip, based on peak foliage at the time. Our interests are scenic drives, gorgeous views/vistas, see a moose or two, maybe visit an orchard..anything and everything that would make this trip a wonderful and memorable Fall experience. We both like taking photos, so any specific suggestions on that would be very welcome too. We are yet to book our place of stay, basically waiting to draft and finalize the itinerary before booking but am afraid it is already too late.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My husband and I (37 and 41) are already excited about our first New England-trip
We will be arriving at Boston airport on 28th of Sept and leaving on the 15th of Oct.
Although I have studied this and other travel-boards extensively, we are still hoping to find
out about some Must-Do's and Must-See's we still haven't wrote down so far. Also if you
can recommend which road to drive that would be very nice. We are looking forward
to see the foliage, covered bridges, hopefully a moose, antique shops and general stores and
christmas stores.
Beside beautiful b&b's we have booked the Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge and a farm in central Vermont.

Any idea will be highly appreciated.

This is the tour:
3 nights in Cambridge, MA (Freedom trail, Tickets for RedSox-game, Harvard University, maybe Duck Tour)
1 night in Hadley, MA (quick side trip for the Big E, which we would love to attend)
scenery-drive from Gloucester to Rockport
1 night in Ogunquit, ME (marginal way)
Kittery, Freeport, Desert of Maine, Stonewall kitchen-store
2 nights in Boothbay Harbor, ME
2 nights in Conway, NH (Kancamagus Highway, drive to the place where "on Golden Pond" was filmed)
2 nights in Rochester, VT (Burlington)
1 night in Taftsville, VT (Woodstock)
1 night still up in the air
2 nights in Thompson, CT (Yankee-Candle-main-store, Sturbridge Village)
Mystic Seaport
2 nights in Newport, RI (the mansions, Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive)
Plimouth Plantation

Anything we can put in?

Thanks in advance

To start with Color may be a little early this year. It's hard to get a handle on it but my basis for thinking this is the relative temps in NE are following normal trends and may even be a little on the low side. The thing that you can follow with out even following the forums is follow the weather channel. When you see cold 40s at night being reported and warm during the days then you can assume that the color will start soon after that... It also takes a few other things to happen. Shorter days and the right amount of rainfall versus dry drought like days/weeks.

Hello, my husband and I are visiting from England from 26 September to 2 October (sadly a short trip but better than nothing!). We are flying into Boston and will pick up a rental car. We can't decide the best place to visit during our short trip. Would Maine or New Hampshire be the best option? We love different sorts of scenery, visiting towns and getting the feel of the history of places. Of course, the beautiful foliage is most important to us!

We'd love any advice that people can give us!

Many thanks,
Is anybody feeling like this will be an early foliage season...if so, I better get my act together fast!

I really want to see Salem and I am wondering what is a "must see". We would also like some hints on taking some day-hikes, bear in mind that we are not overly athletic as we are all in our 50's but we do walk a lot so we are not totally lost. We are planning on Maine, N.H. and Vermont and we have 10 days or so! Thanks

Hello everyone,

My dream is to see the beautiful foliage on a slow, old fashioned steam train ride AND visit Salem during Halloween. From reading all of your comments it looks like peak foliage season is somewhere at the beginning to mid October? However, Halloween is at the end of October. I have a lot of free time but I am low on hotel funds and need to accomplish both during the same visit. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thank you so much!

We won't be making it to the East Coast this Fall sadly. We will be having a nice family trip to the ocean here in WA state in September. Also perhaps make a trip to OR where it's alot like New England, some of the homes and old buildings, and the trees are almost just as bright, if not exactly, like in New England. It'll have to do. ; )

What toe tappin' tunes do any of you like to listen to while leef peeping? I know there's alot of bluegrass floating around on the East Coast. What do you like? I need to get some new music into my iPod.

Thanks! : )

You Autumn Addicts don't know what you're missing if you haven't visited in the spring. The bare limbs are starting to color up. Weeping willows seem to be the first - yellowish green. The maples are in flower now with reddish fuzz. In a little while the hills will be alive with color so that even a commute on Rt 93 is pretty. Syrup season is over with and has been for a couple of weeks in our neck of the woods. My husband is researching maple trees so he can dig up some saplings from our woods to transplant along the driveway. The beautiful maple in front of our house was a sapling he transplanted in the 70s.
Unfortunately, with predictions of temps in the 70s, maybe 80s this weekend, we figure black flies will be starting. We had almost the last of our parsnips last Thursday. I planted a row of sugar snap peas and other cold hardy veggies last weekend. The spring peepers are loud but a friend just 1/2 north of us says they are just starting in his town. If you don't know what a spring peeper is, google it. There's a website or two with audio so you can hear those little guys make noise that sounds like hundreds of jingle bells.
Happy Spring! My favorite time of the year.
