Is City Soil Garden-Ready?

Soil tests are important for city gardening

by R. Wayne Mezitt

City soils are notoriously challenging because of the inevitable disruption of urban construction. Your soil may be suitable as is for growing ornamental plants. But before you add compost or nutrients, and particularly if you intend to grow edible crops, it is important to test the soil.

Soil tests provide recommendations for growing healthy crops, and they can also reveal the presence of lead and other contaminants that may be toxic. One helpful resource is http://umass.edu/plsoils/soiltest. And, of course, you can always ask the experts at your local garden center for their recommendations.
