Crafts: Make Cork Place Cards

by Christine Chitnis

After spending time with my little brother, Tommy, I am always inspired to tap into the childlike creativity that he uses when crafting. I recently watched him make little cork boats, with elaborate sails, for bobbing in the lake. With a few changes, these little boats would make the perfect place cards for a summer get-together!

Materials for Cork Place Cards:

  • Watercolor Paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Watercolor paper
  • Corks
  • Knife
  • Toothpicks
  • Tape
  • Scissors

Instructions to Make Cork Place Cards

Using your watercolor paints, paint strips of red, and blue (or any colors of your choosing) onto your watercolor paper, leaving a strip of white in the center. Once the paint has dried, cut out triangles, and in the white space, write your guests names. Using clear tape, stick a toothpick to the back of the "sail." Cut your corks in half with a knife, and in order for your boats to sit nicely on the table without tipping, also cut straight the rounded bottom. Stick your toothpick sail into the cork, and you're ready to party!

I had a surprise birthday party for my husband. All the guests had dogs, so I bought dog toys and stuck labels on with the dinner guests\' names. It was a hit and a functional as well as fun way to let everyone know where they were seated. To top it off, all the dog toys came from the dollar store so I while it looked as if I were being extravagant I was not.
