Dear Yankee

Connecticut's Rising Star

Thank God for people like Eddie Perez ("The Hope of Hartford," June 2006) and his supporters, and for their pride in themselves, their aspirations, and their abilities. All the help and loving attention provided by them is needed and worthy. -- Edward W. Schultze, North Eastham, MA

As a native of Hartford, I was pleased to see such an upbeat article on the city. It is looking up again after its decline. I must, however, make a correction. The Wadsworth Atheneum is not one of the oldest art museums -- it is the oldest public art museum in America. It was founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth, making it older than New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Boston's Museum of Fine Arts by 30 years. The collection is worth the trip to Connecticut's Rising Star. -- Elizabeth B. Woollacott, Simsbury, CT

Nature's Gifts

I was very disturbed by the article entitled "Unbearable," which was printed in your June 2006 issue. I was shocked to read that such inhumane treatment of our nation's beautiful black bears was permissible in the state of Maine. How could the authorities managing this magnificent land, chock-full of nature's gifts, allow these shameful practices to go on? -- Charlotte Nemeth, Hewitt, NJ

Chile Cream Pie?

I just moved from my home of 41 years in North Andover, Massachusetts, to New Mexico. Thank you so much for posting recipes online! Now I can make my favorite treat -- Boston Cream Pie. I'm not even going to try Boston Cream Pie made in Albuquerque. There might be chiles in it. -- Jennifer Caffrey, Albuquerque, NM

New England Oasis

I want to create a New England-style oasis in my home to keep us inspired until we're ready to move back East. Since you're the magazine of New England, what books or Web sites would you suggest I look at? Any ideas would be so greatly appreciated. -- Stacy McCarty, Spokane Valley, WA

Editor's note: We can suggest our own award-winning Web site! Go to YankeeMagazine.com for food, home, and garden ideas.

Can't Hardly Wait

Your magazine is like a wonderful gift at Christmastime. I love being a New Englander when I read Yankee. It makes me so aware of everything our six states have to offer. -- Karen Greely, Roque Bluffs, ME
