IssuesDecember 2006Today in New England

Dear Yankee

Anything But Drives!

In a time of high gas prices and growing awareness about global warming, I wish that your article "The Best Drives" (September) would have encouraged alternative ways to experience New England's best roads. By all means, if people are passing through the area, they should know where the good roads are -- but we should all keep in mind that biking and walking are a healthier, cleaner form of transportation. And you get to meet more local people on the way!

Emily Wheeler, East Burke, VT

Editor's note: Excellent points. We regularly run articles about fresh-air activities (hiking, swimming, snow sports), and we always encourage readers to get out of their cars and explore the towns, parks, and attractions we highlight.

In a Stew Over Celery

We think there is a glaring error in the Oyster Stew recipe ("Our World Is an Oyster," September issue) in the amount of celery used and the wording. A stalk of celery is the bunch you buy in the produce department, while a rib of celery is one of the arms of the stalk. Please refer to it this way so we all can understand the amount used. We have a huge recipe book collection, and when we buy, the first reading is to find if they use the amount of celery correctly. If not, we put it back.

Spirit of Hope

Bravo for a wonderful article! I just finished reading your story about the remarkable Jack Williams and his amazing work ("Not Enough Wednesdays," October issue). I am so warmed by the thought that such greatness and generosity does still exist in this world. Luis, I think, will live up to his given name of Angel. Only twice have I been moved to tears by a story in your magazine -- something that surprised me the first time, but not the second.

Erin Hedden, West Cornwall, CT

An Island Canvas

Thanks to Yankee Magazine and Peter Ralston for "Betsy's World" (October). Since my first visit to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, about 10 years ago, I have been very fond of the works of Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. Ralston's article gave me a little window into the world that Betsy Wyeth created, which has inspired so much of their work.

Cheese News

Orb Weaver Farm ("Dairy Made," October issue) has a new Web site: orbweaverfarm.com. And the New England Dairy Promotion Board has a new phone number: 617-734-6750.

Delayed Dismay

Every Christmas has a Grinch

Who steals your pleasure inch by inch,

But thanks to credit cards, the woe

Won't come for thirty days or so.
