What would Senator George Aiken say to the president today?

"Declare victory and bring the boys home."

George Aiken

Senator from Vermont, 1966

A congressional colleague called Aiken "neither a hawk nor a dove, but a wise old owl." Aiken, who always called himself a farmer first, was a former governor of Vermont who served 34 years in the Senate. He spent $17.09 in his final reelection campaign -- all on postage to thank supporters. He retired from politics in 1975 and came home to his farm on Putney Mountain, a mile from where he was born. Aiken died in 1984.
