Book Review: Dark Nights, Dark Stories

by Katrina A. Yeager

There must be something about our long wait for spring that inspires Granite State authors to write crime stories rife with compelling drama and gripping action. Check out two of our favorites.

Jodi Picoult's newest book, Nineteen Minutes, due out in March, is about a school shooting in a New Hampshire town and its impact on the community -- especially when a student is charged. "I'm a mom," Jodi told us. "The reason I wrote this is not because I wanted to illuminate school bullying ... but because my kids came home with problems that made me think about it." She uses her signature courtroom scenes to ask about "the different ways we judge people and who, if anyone, really is qualified to do it." This emotional story will get you thinking, and that's exactly her goal.

Fans of Yankee contributor William G. Tapply eagerly await the March release of Gray Ghost, his next Stoney Calhoun novel set in Maine. (We recommend you read the first one in the series before you pick this one up.)
