This particular apple variety is a Northeast native. With a distinctive, robust flavor, it's a crisp and juicy treat and a favorite for pies and cider, too. In the 1940s, Herbert A. Philbrick, a Boston-area advertising executive, infiltrated a number of Communist Party cells in eastern Massachusetts at the request of the FBI; he later testified against party leaders in federal court and before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. In 1952, he published his memoir, I Led 3 Lives: Citizen, "Communist," Counterspy, which became the basis of a movie and a popular television series. In later life, he retired to the New Hampshire seacoast, where he managed a paint store and did some news reporting and freelance writing. He died in 1993.
