Vermont Treasures
Take the family to these attractions
Touring through Vermont's "treasure towns" with the family aboard? Here are some stops you'll want to add to your itinerary. Near Norwich, hop on the White River Flyer for a choice of train rides along the Connecticut River Valley or to neighboring villages. Near Vergennes, look for "treasure" in Button Bay State Park. Near Newfane, plan a picnic and a swim at Townshend Lake Recreation Area.
Button Bay State Park
Set off on a lakeside treasure hunt, looking for the little clay “buttons” that gave their name to Button Bay State Park. They were formed around the stems of long-gone vegetation. [DETAILS]
Townshend Lake Recreation Area
Just 7 miles north of Newfane on Route 30, Townshend Lake Recreation Area provides a nice sandy beach along an impoundment of the West River behind an Army Corps of Engineers dam. The area also has picnic tables and nature trails. [DETAILS]
Green Mountain Railroad
Scoot up to the Montshire Museum from White River Junction (or travel in the opposite direction) via the White River Flyer. The train ride along the Connecticut River Valley takes 10 to 20 minutes. Trains also leave the Montshire for the scenic village of Thetford, for a 90-minute loop round trip (2 hours if you include White River Junction). [DETAILS]
