W.E.B. Du Bois, 1901 Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University. During his life-time as a leading American intellectual, journalist, editor, sociologist, and cofounder of the NAACP, his writings commanded worldwide attention.
