A big pot of homemade soup and a loaf of crusty bread right out of the oven.

Comment from Heather Graack on December 24, 2007

A hot cup of coffee in front of the roaring fireplace!

Comment from Lyn Burkett on December 27, 2007

A thermos of hot chocolate and some homemade fruitcake carried along on a snowshoe outing in the mountains.

Comment from Susan Updike on December 28, 2007

Standing at my kitchen window with a cup of coffee in my hand watching my birds at the feeder.

Comment from Carol Hartery on December 30, 2007

Sitting in my wing chair in front of the fireplace with my afghan draped over me and a book in my lap.

Comment from D&S Coombs on December 30, 2007

A cup of hot cider, a good mystery and a fire in the fireplace. David

Comment from D&S Coombs on December 30, 2007

Milka chocolate, home-made cookies and a good book. Sigrun

Comment from Kim Beatty on December 31, 2007

Drinking hot chocolate with my 3 year old son while he's telling me how much he likes "whiffed" cream.

Comment from Debra Crandall on January 1, 2008

Sitting in my recliner by the wood stove with a fleece blanket on my lap working on a jigsaw puzzle.

Comment from Erik Johnson on January 1, 2008

A glass of McCallan single malt.

Comment from Janice Jenkins on January 1, 2008

Sitting down to a big pot of Bean soup and hot cornbread slathered with butter. I am a Yankee transplant to NC but it gets cold here too and nothing better than beans and cornbread.

Comment from Veronica Reino on January 2, 2008

Sitting down with a bowl of hot homemade soup after being outside in the cold. There is nothing better than a warm bowl of soup to thaw out frozen fingers and warm the body.

Comment from Helen Scott on January 3, 2008

Chicken 'n Dumplings. I still remember the pot my mother used to cook it in, and how we couldn't peek into the pot until the dumplings were done.

Perhaps it's a reflection of my continual refusal to grow up, but my favorite winter comfort is a warm snuggly pair of mittens. Every ready to dip into a freshly fallen snow, making an impromptu snowman, and a childish reminder of the puppets on Capt Kangaroo Show of olde......the best mittens are those that have been carefully crafted by kind hands, for those warm from fingertips to heart.

Comment from priscilla hofmann on January 4, 2008

I think Carol Hartery almost perfectly described my favorite winter comfort. Only thing lacking is my big soft white ragdoll cat laying in my lap and insisting I disregard that book I just picked up.

Comment from Karyl Meehan on January 4, 2008

For me, it's a steaming bowl of homemade turkey soup, a pile of Ritz crackers and my big furry white slippers on my feet while curled up in the recliner with a cat or two curled up in my lap.

Comment from Laura Robinson on January 5, 2008

It's so hard to pick just one, I love a big pot of beef stew with a hot loaf of home made bread and family all around, or a steaming mug of hot chocolate, or being snuggled up in a recliner with a good book, a nice glass of wine and my pug snoring at my feet.

Comment from Patsey Manning on January 7, 2008

Homemade soup simmering all day in the crockpot, and side dishes of veggies and potatoes. Yummy, old-fashioned comfort foods.

Comment from Melanie Lima on January 8, 2008

Getting up early to listen to the radio for school announcements of a SNOW DAY!! Then spending the rest of the day in our pajamas doing whatever we want.

Comment from Diane Roberts on January 11, 2008

Very bad for me since I became a lifetime member of Weight Watchers over a year ago -- HOWEVER -- my comfort food during the cold weather would be a gigantic helping of homemade baked macaroni. Just curl up in my favorite chair -- watch some football and dig into my macaroni and cheese -- be still my heart!!

Comment from Bonnie Nicholas on January 14, 2008

All your comments are wonderful - perfectly New England. You all stole my thoughts! I wouldn't live in any other part of the world! But my favorite would be a horse drawn sleigh ride complete with jingle bells on a quiet country road. Nothing better!

Comment from Norma Deston on January 16, 2008

My favorite is watching a brilliant red Cardinal in a snow covered tree. There is nothing more beautiful in Natyre.

Comment from Mr & Mrs Chris Guerard on January 20, 2008

Snuggling up with our granddaughter in front of our fireplace, sipping on hot cocoa with whipped cream and marshmellows. It is even BETTER if the snow is softly falling outside.

Comment from nicolas kay on January 22, 2008

Snow outside, a fire, piano and great classic book inside.

Comment from Karen Baker on January 23, 2008

Snow is so much prettier to watch coming down than rain, which is why I love winter over late fall/early spring! I'd much rather walk in the snow, than the rain also. Inside, give me a good book, a fireplace, some cocoa (if using the powdered mix-with-water kind, use half water, half milk or eggnog for a much better taste) topped with whipped cream or marshmallows, crackers and hummus, and a pair of old sweats to wear.

Comment from CAROLYN SZELL on January 31, 2008

This is so funny! I'm originally from Massachusetts, however, been in Florida for over 35 years. I visit MA often...miss it terribly. But, I just had to say that as I'm sitting here reading all of these comments, would you believe I'm also sipping on a hot cup of cocoa with marshmellow fluff in it. It's January and barely a chill in the air. I guess some things never change, however. Once a New Englander, always a New Englander!!!

Comment from Kathe Molloy on February 5, 2008

Each afternoon when I return home from work I brew a pot of tea. Sometimes it\'s strong Irish Afternoon tea, sometimes it's Biglow's Constant Comment or other favorite. The daily ritual of filling the kettle with fresh water, measuring tea, slicing lemon, and setting out cups and saucers along with ginger cookies is part of the comfort. When the tea is steeped and the tray is set I bring it to the livingroom where, if other family members have arrived home, we sit and talk over our day with one another. If no one has arrived yet I use tea time for quiet reflection, gratitude for the things that are, and anticipation of the things that will be. Time for tea is the warm, peaceable hour that is my anchor to the comfort of home and family.

Comment from TRISHA CRAIG on February 5, 2008

My favorite comfort in winter is a pile of cotton blankets. I also love all the winter clothes - wool sweaters, fluffy socks, boots, down jackets, and the merino wool scarf my mother knitted for me!! Winter, for me, is all about the textiles!

Comment from Linn Robison on February 7, 2008

A cat on my lap, a good cup of coffee or a cup of Constant Comment tea and a great book - of course some homemade New England Clam Chowder would be a nice addition (minus the cat on the lap - my cats would go after the chowder!).

Comment from Susan Cole on February 9, 2008

Curled up with the New York Sunday Times in front of a fireplace, with low soft flames, a mug of hot mulled cider while watching the snow swirl around and slowly fall to the ground.

Comment from Megan Jaekle on February 11, 2008

I love to spend a sunny winter day outside, dressed for the weather, walking with my dog and thoroughly enjoying the feeling of the sun on my face coupled with the crunch of snow under my feet. A snowy day? Same recipe, but replace the sun on my face with snowflakes on my eyelashes.

Comment from Carl Johnson on February 18, 2008

I feel best in the winter when the days start getting longer, even a minute a day in the beginning. Just like Christmas, I like the anticipation almost as much as the actual day. It lets me see the end of the tunnel is coming and brings hope of better days.
