Perhaps it's a reflection of my continual refusal to grow up, but my favorite winter comfort is a warm snuggly pair of mittens. Every ready to dip into a freshly fallen snow, making an impromptu snowman, and a childish reminder of the puppets on Capt Kangaroo Show of olde......the best mittens are those that have been carefully crafted by kind hands, for those warm from fingertips to heart.

Very bad for me since I became a lifetime member of Weight Watchers over a year ago -- HOWEVER -- my comfort food during the cold weather would be a gigantic helping of homemade baked macaroni. Snow is so much prettier to watch coming down than rain, which is why I love winter over late fall/early spring! I'd much rather walk in the snow, than the rain also. Inside, give me a good book, a fireplace, some cocoa (if using the powdered mix-with-water kind, use half water, half milk or eggnog for a much better taste) topped with whipped cream or marshmallows, crackers and hummus, and a pair of old sweats to wear.

This is so funny! I'm originally from Massachusetts, however, been in Florida for over 35 years. I visit MA often...miss it terribly. But, I just had to say that as I'm sitting here reading all of these comments, would you believe I'm also sipping on a hot cup of cocoa with marshmellow fluff in it. It's January and barely a chill in the air. I guess some things never change, however. Once a New Englander, always a New Englander!!!

Each afternoon when I return home from work I brew a pot of tea. Sometimes it\'s strong Irish Afternoon tea, sometimes it's Biglow's Constant Comment or other favorite. The daily ritual of filling the kettle with fresh water, measuring tea, slicing lemon, and setting out cups and saucers along with ginger cookies is part of the comfort. When the tea is steeped and the tray is set I bring it to the livingroom where, if other family members have arrived home, we sit and talk over our day with one another. If no one has arrived yet I use tea time for quiet reflection, gratitude for the things that are, and anticipation of the things that will be. Time for tea is the warm, peaceable hour that is my anchor to the comfort of home and family.

My favorite comfort in winter is a pile of cotton blankets. I also love all the winter clothes - wool sweaters, fluffy socks, boots, down jackets, and the merino wool scarf my mother knitted for me!! Winter, for me, is all about the textiles!

I feel best in the winter when the days start getting longer, even a minute a day in the beginning. Just like Christmas, I like the anticipation almost as much as the actual day. It lets me see the end of the tunnel is coming and brings hope of better days.
