Nathan Clifford School

Portland, Maine

by Justin Shatwell

This striking stone schoolhouse has been the keystone of its neighborhood for 100 years. Nathan Clifford is located amidst the homes of the city residents it serves, blending seamlessly into the neighborhood. It enjoys the support of local families, and more than 50 percent of its students walk to school each day. But like so many other neighborhood schools, it's poised to be replaced with a modern building farther from the community. Although the closing may lead to the demolition or disuse of the building, local preservationists contend that the damage done to the fabric of the community is the greater tragedy.
