Restaurant Review: Blue Sky, York, ME
Lydia Shire's new restaurant

York Beach in southern Maine is more honky-tonk than exclusive coastal resort, so chef Lydia Shire's exciting new eatery, Blue Sky, is turning heads -- not just for its sleek, sexy design but also for the inspired plates coming out of the kitchen.
A well-known kitchen maverick, Lydia has been wowing diners since the 1980s with her groundbreaking cuisine at Seasons in the Millennium Bostonian Hotel. From there, she opened Biba, Pignoli, and Excelsior, also in the Hub. Then she managed to shock the old boys' network when she took over Locke-Ober, breathing new life into that venerable dining room without tossing out the charm and ambience.
Blue Sky is indeed upscale, yet it exudes comfort, thanks to cozy nooks, a fireplace, and a wood-burning oven, all in a dining room painted in cool ocean blues, with a perimeter of banquette seating in sandy, cream-colored leather. The menu is pricier than most local options, but lobster pizza (one of Lydia's signature dishes -- she offers eight other lobster preparations as well), maple-roasted salmon, and chicken under a brick are worth opening your wallet wide for.
