What the Locals Know

New Haven friends tell us that the best Japanese restaurant in the U.S. is in their backyard. At Miso, exquisite East Asian dishes appear alongside stellar sushi, which features the freshest of tuna rolls. Entrées: from $17. 15 Orange St., New Haven. 203-848-6472; misorestaurant.com

In Norwalk, 14 miles from the Aldrich Museum, strike out for Fat Cat Pie Company, another secret the locals failed to keep. A pizza parlor of a different stripe, Fat Cat features all organic ingredients. Even the wines are organic. Choose from a dozen exotic cheeses, and sample toppings such as grilled eggplant, homemade spicy sausage, and chopped roasted asparagus. 9-11 Wall St., Norwalk. 203-523-0389; fatcatpie.com

And if it's one of those blue-sky days, take the pizza with you and head for Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, one of the most beautiful beaches along the Connecticut shoreline. Open daily 8-sunset; $10-$15/vehicle Apr.-Sept., free Oct.-Mar. Route 1, Westport. 203-226-6983; ct.gov/dep
