VIDEO: Sunflowers by the Acre

A sea of sunflowers for Make-A-Wish

Every year Sunflowers for Wishes raises thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Tim Friar, president of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut, talks about how volunteers, like the Button family of Buttonwood Farm, help them fulfill their mission of providing children with one perfect day. As an expatriot New Englander now living in the mid-west I enjoy my monthly subscription to Yankee. This month I read the article about Duane Button and his charity efforts for "Make-A-Wish Foundation.

This year in our area it has been a wet and cold spring and as a result the corn crop has failed. We have a gazillion acres of space to plant short season crops but little motivation to do so. I have suggested to area farmers, through my online blog, that Duane might be an inspiration to them to plant crops to help less fortunate people.

I don't know if this seed will take root or not but keep the inspirational stories coming. America needs these to remind us of who we really are as a people.

Best Regards,

Paul Munnis Rochester, MN

WOW, I was so excited to see this article and this issue of Yankee. My friend gave me the subscription as a Christmas present because I travel to Maine every summer. I definitely plan on stopping to visit Buttonwood Farm on my way to Maine this year. What a beautiful idea for all involved. Cindy from Maryland

When I see these photos one after another I am reminded again of how one person, or a few people, can touch so many people. I hope Yankee's story on Buttonwood farm reaches far and wide and that they have more people visit this summer than ever before.

SUNFLOWERS=RESPECT. I wonder if the creators of Sunflowers for Wishes knew their meaning in advance (they probably did). What a great way to respect those who are suffering and in need of a bit of happiness.
