Steve Silk: Spring Bulbs

Flowers and Trees
Credit: Richard Brown
Flowering trees -- redbuds, magnolias, and sand cherries -- vie for equal attention as they form a dazzling backdrop on the Silk/Emery Connecticut property.

"Create bold swaths of color by planting seven or more bulbs in each cluster," advises Steve Silk. "It's better to use many of a few different kinds, rather than a few of many varieties. And to extend the season, plant early-, mid-, and late-flowering bulb varieties, especially with tulips and daffodils."
