Portsmouth Brewery

Located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, this company has been pleasing patrons since 1991. In the dining room, savor a pulled pork sandwich, a grilled pizzetta, or even a New York strip steak. In the lounge one floor down, sprawl out on the funky furniture or settle into a chair to appreciate one of their 10 signature craft beers on tap and brewed on-site or at their sister brewery Smuttynose Brewing Company, also in Portsmouth. If you’re up for it, play a game of pool or table shuffle board while enjoying their hot, salty homemade chips. Best seller: Cream Ale. [DETAILS]

Strawbery Banke

The original name of this seaside settlement is today the name of a nonprofit museum consisting of an eclectic collection of historic houses and buildings—some grand, some common—that together provide a glimpse of coastal life over the span of three centuries. This historic village is set just across from Prescott Park. [DETAILS]

Press Room

The Press Room, a downtown Portsmouth institution that combines the ambience of a waterfront tavern circa 1810 with the smoky charm of a ’50s jazz joint. Actually, The Press Room spans both eras: its great rough-hewn beams and exposed brick walls hark back to the days when wooden ships jostled along the waterfront, and its intimate, narrow main room (you can’t tell quite where the stage begins) is a perfect setting for a small combo and its appreciative audience. [DETAILS]

Library Restaurant

We came for the cozy bar and stayed for dinner in the elegant dining room. On the main level of a restored mansion (now condos), the Library features walls lined with hardbound books, hand-carved Spanish mahogany paneling, and Shreve, Crump, and Low light fixtures. The menu is well regarded for its steaks and chops. [DETAILS]

Gulliver's

Alison Tucker runs one of the best travel-book and map shops in the country. Whether you're preparing for a trip or merely dreaming of one, Gulliver's will help you get away-with books, maps, globes (the largest selection in New England), journals, money belts, neck pillows, and language-learning aids. [DETAILS]

Sharon Platt Early American Antiques - The Antiquarium

Sharon's business specializes in early decorative arts; she sells antiques and a special line of paints in her shop. Historic Paint Colours are available in 15 interior latex colors and matching primers, including two whitewashes (excellent for old plaster or for creating a textured effect on drywall). [DETAILS]
