Best Bargain $2.75 for a fish sandwich, $3.25 for a clam-strip sandwich, $4.50 for a whole-belly-clam, shrimp, or scallop sandwich—big spenders add $1.75 for superior onion rings—all on a no-frills deck overlooking the Norwalk River where it enters Long Island Sound. Talk about democracy--you and the gulls have the same great view as the yachties sailing by! [DETAILS]
Talbots Outlet Center
Best Bargain Imagine quality Talbots togs—mostly women’s, some kids’ and men’s, all overstock, past their prime or “as is”--at Filene’s Basement prices. Buys are even better during special sales in June, September, and November, when you get to take an extra 30 to 75 percent off and can scoop up $300 worth of glad rags for $30. Next door: the state’s first L.L. Bean outlet. [DETAILS]
Edmond Town Hall
Best Bargain A grand old (1930) theater featuring second-run flicks at $2 a seat for all shows--and the 526 seats in the main downstairs auditorium were just redone. Even the munchies are a bargain--$3 for a large popcorn. [DETAILS]
Yale University Art Gallery
To see some of the French Impressionist paintings that inspired their American counterparts, visit the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Among the museum’s 185,000 objects are masterworks by Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Bonnard, and Pissarro. Admission is free, which helps draw 156,000 visitors a year. [DETAILS]
Yale Center for British Art
Wander among the largest and most comprehensive collection of British art outside of grand old England. This museum definitely has bragging rights: 1,900 paintings, 100 sculptures, 20,000 drawings and watercolors, 30,000 prints, and 30,000 titles of rare books and manuscripts. Housed inside the museum’s walls are masterpieces dating back to the 15th century. [DETAILS]
Miya's Sushi
Best Bargain Chef Bun Lai, for whom sushi is an art form, a calling, and a passion, pushes the creativity envelope. You’ll find things here (“Water Piglet Roll,” “Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright Roll,” “Oo La La Mitzvah! Roll”) you’ll find nowhere else, often made with items that Bun has fished or foraged himself. So his 10-course Wednesday night “especial” for $35.75 is a real best buy. [DETAILS]
