5 Tips for Great Sand Castles

sand

  1. First, find a spot just above the high-tide line, so your creation doesn't get washed away.
  2. Shovel sand into a pile.
  3. Then add water to keep it dense, and pound the wet sand down.
  4. Repeat until you achieve a good height.
  5. Now for the sculpting: Carve with your trowel and refine with your palette knife, starting at the top and working your way down.

The town of East Lyme, CT, will be holding their 5th annual Sand Castle Contest as part of their Celebrate East Lyme Day activities on July 17, 2010. This past year's contest was the most successful by far. Creations ranged from an authentic looking Eskimo Igloo, to an amazing rendition of The Grinch hiding under a Christmas tree. East Lyme encourages people of all hometowns, ages, and skill-levels to participate in this annual event. The contest is sponsored by East Lyme Parks & Recreation and anybody can call the office for more information or to sign up for the 2010 Sand Castle Contest. (860) 739-5828.
