Portland Head Light is where my grandmother was born and grew up. Her brother and other relatives were lighthouse keepers from the 1600's on. She taught school in Southport until she married my grandfather and moved to MA for his dental practice but they kept a cottage in Southport for many years. I have been exchanging information with the Historical Commission in Augusta. The photo of the lighthouse which I have never seen but would love is, is beautiful! Thank you.

I want to mention Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport RI. If you are in Newport Rhode Island catch the ferry from Fort Adams or Jamestown for a visit 10 AM-4 PM for tours. The lighthouse has two rooms for rent downstairs for overnight. One can also stay for a week upstairs. Visit www.roseisland.org for more info. Sorry about the commercial plug I just would hate for people to miss out.

Nice feature, but I was disappointed to see that Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire, wasn't included. Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse has about 30 open house dates this season, along with other events. See www.portsmouthharborlighthouse.org.

(Also, a technical note -- these pages are a mess on my system -- the banner ads overlap the content and make it very hard to read. I'm using Firefox 3.0.11 on a Mac.)
