The clues:

First: John Chapman (1774-1845), the apple of Leominster, Massachusetts' eye, morphed into the legendary Johnny Appleseed when he headed westward at the age of 18, establishing apple-tree nurseries throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

Second: In game six of the 1986 World Series, an ill-fated ground ball that never made it into Bill Buckner's glove erased memories of his gutsy season. The Mets won the Series two nights later, and "Billy Buck" bore the brunt of Red Sox fans' ire.

This two-word phrase pairs the clues:

_ _ _ _   _ U _
