Best FarmStay
INN AT VALLEY FARMS, Walpole
The 18th-century house on this glorious 105-acre organic farm is elegantly comfortable. Angus cattle graze on the hillside and free-range chickens "contribute" to the candlelit breakfasts. Rooms: from $175, including full breakfast. 633 Wentworth Road. 877-327-2855, 603-756-2855; innatvalleyfarms.com

Best Reason to Rise & Shine
WILDERNESS INN, North Woodstock
A lumber baron built this 1912 Arts & Crafts home within earshot of the Lost River. Now each guestroom evokes a stop on a world tour taken by its current owners, the Yarnells, when their children were young. Michael's famous breakfasts are open to the public. Our favorite: apple crepes with sour cream and chopped walnuts. 57 Main St. (Route 3). 888-777-7813, 603-745-3890; thewildernessinn.com

Best Grand Hotel With a Spa
OMNI MOUNT WASHINGTON RESORT, Bretton Woods
Fresh from a multimillion-dollar facelift, this 200-room, vintage 1902 diva has never looked better. From the Great Hall to the full-service spa, alterations have enhanced the hotel's character. Route 302. 877-873-0626, 603-278-1000; mountwashingtonresort.com

Best Small-Town B&B
ASHBURN HOUSE, Fitzwilliam
A boar's head hangs above the glowing hearth in the dining room, the setting for candlelit breakfasts. Carole and Ken Beckwith's early-1800s Federal house is filled with antiques. Just as important: They tune guests in to all there is to do in the Monadnock region. 20 Upper Troy Road. 603-585-7198; ashburnhouse.net

Best Multigenerational Resort
TWIN LAKE VILLAGE, New London
Generations of Kidders have welcomed generations of guests to The Villa and its neighboring cottages on Little Lake Sunapee. Guests play tennis and golf, sail, paddle, or just rock on the verandah. Weekly rates include supervised children's mornings in the Playbarn and evening entertainment. 164 Twin Lake Village Road. 603-526-6460; twinlakevillage.com

Best Romantic Getaway
ROSEWOOD COUNTRY INN, Bradford
Whatever magic makes a place romantic, this rose-shuttered inn has it. Set amid gardens and surrounded by woods and meadows, its rooms and suites come with gas fireplaces and Jacuzzis. Common spaces include a cozy tavern. Breakfasts are served by candlelight. 67 Pleasant View Road. 800-938-5273, 603-938-5253; rosewoodcountryinn.com

Best Family Retreat
WATERVILLE VALLEY RESORT, Waterville Valley
Circled by majestic mountains, this valley was a summer resort long before its skiing fame. Besides hiking, you'll find golf, tennis, boating, swimming, and lift-assisted mountain biking, plus kids' sports camps. Add summer music for adults and condo-style units at prices well below winter rates. 1 Ski Area Road. 800-468-2553, 603-236-8311; waterville.com
