Felt Mittens
Credit: Christine Chitnis

Add a special touch to your holiday gifts by decorating them with ornaments you make yourself using these templates and instructions.

Materials for Felt Mitten Ornaments:

wool felt
assorted ribbon, trim, and yarn
glue and hot-glue gun
needle and embroidery thread
two yarn pom-poms

Instructions for Felt Mitten Ornaments

1. Print the accompanying ornament pattern. Pin or trace each pattern piece onto felt and cut out 2 mittens and 2 cuffs.
2. Using contrasting embroidery thread, sew a blanket-stitch border around each mitten.
3. Glue a piece of lace along the length of the cuff, wrapping the ends around the back. Glue the cuff to the mitten.
4. Using a thin piece of yarn or embroidery thread, sew a pom-pom to the outer edge of one mitten, opposite the thumb.
5. Without cutting the yarn, attach the other pom-pom to the second mitten, leaving a trail of yarn for hanging the ornament.

Felt Ornaments: Sailboat

Materials for Felt Sailboat Ornaments:

wool felt
assorted ribbon, trim, and yarn
glue and hot-glue gun
needle and embroidery thread

Instructions for Felt Sailboat Ornaments

1. Print the accompanying ornament pattern. Pin or trace each pattern piece onto felt, and cut out 2 hulls, 1 big sail, 1 small sail, and 1 flag.
2. Using contrasting embroidery thread, sew a blanket-stitch border around each sail. You can also personalize the sails by embroidering the year or monogrammed initials.
3. Choose one hull as your front piece; set the other one aside for now. Glue rickrack or decorative ribbon to the front hull. Wrap the ends around the back and glue. (This keeps the ends out of sight and prevents unraveling.)
4. Using tiny dots of hot glue, attach the sails to the hull, and the flag to the top of the sails. Glue the second hull to the back.
5. Sew a loop of embroidery thread or ribbon to the back of the ornament.
