I was sorry to see the captions on your beautiful slide show refer to Quonochontaug as \"Quonnie.\" \'Quonnie\' is a commercial/real estate short cut for \'Quonochontaug,\' a melodious Algonquian Indian name meaning \"extended deserted place; at the long beach; two long ponds in succession,\" an apt description of the Quonochontaug section of Charlestown. It seems to have taken hold over the last decade. Go to http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rigenweb/IndianPlaceNames.html maintained by Dr. Frank Waabu O\'Brien of the Aquidneck Indian Council, \"A Public Foundation Preserving the Past,\" for more information.
Those who choose a nickname for Quonochontaug help to erase the Native American presence from our land. I hate to see that newish nickname used in the venerable Yankee Magazine.
