Jim Salge is a nature photographer based in southern New Hampshire. He has a deep-rooted appreciation for nature and the wilderness, which has manifested itself into numerous outdoor pursuits. He has long enjoyed hiking, fly fishing, mountain biking and cross country skiing, but now plans these activities to complement photography.
Jim began taking pictures while working as a meteorologist at the Mount Washington Observatory, and though he now works as a high school science teacher in Bedford, NH, the White Mountains remain a focus of his photography. He will often begin before dawn, and stay out after sunset, immersing himself in the natural environment. Jim actively researches his subjects, and often returns to locations again and again to find the conditions that will best bring a connection with scene to the viewer.
Jim shoots with a digital SLR camera, but makes extensive use of filters when shooting to control the light during difficult exposure. He finds great joy in traditional techniques and strives to get the exposure right in camera, and to process the image to the most natural look possible.

Jim has been a part of the Yankee Photography page for most of it\'s existence. His photography takes us to places that most New Englanders never see. He presents the wild mountain areas of New England in photographs that will make even couch potatoes want to get up and go out and explore. His work is always top notch and an he\'s an excellent choice for Photographer of the month....

VERY BEAUTIFUL PICTURES , BUT IT MAKES ME MISS MAINE EVEN MORE WHEN I SEE THESE PICS ! I FAIL IN LOVE WITH MAINE BACK IN 1986 WHEN I MOVIED THERE FROM DENVER,COLORADO AND NOW I AM LIVING BACK IN COLORADO HAVE BEEN SINCE 1991 , BOY THIS STINKS - RATHER BE BACK IN THAT BEAUTIFUL STATE ON MAINE OR VERMONT . JimSalge \'s photography is such an inspiration - both as subject matter and as an example of the fine art of making beautiful photographs. I love reading about his exploits in the wildlands of New England and look forward to each new picture. The fox is beautiful. Until a few months ago they would roam our back yard, which abuts the only natural \'forest\' in Providence. We don\'t see them any more. However, we have seen a coyote, and that makes me apprehensive about the fox.

I was wondering if the fox lives outside at the Mt. Washington Hotel. We were there in the fall and took some pictures of a fox who seemed to be posing for us. I love your pictures. I love the landscape with all the snow and more snow is on its way.

I\'ve been along on quite a few hikes with Jim while he was looking for specific shots and it is very impressive to see him at work. His eye for the right angle and right light to perfect the composition is impressive, as is his patience in finding that right shot.
His winter shots that are highlighted here are fantastic, but he has gems from all seasons. I keep a large print of one of his works in my office at work as a \"window\" to keep myself sane on those long days. Great job Jim, can\'t wait to see what\'s next!

You teach in bedford, NH? That was my first teaching job many years ago....at mcKelvie School before it became a Middle School....it was an elementary at the time! Love your work...teaching AND photography!

Thank you to Yankee Magazine for allowing me to showcase my photography this month. It\'s truly an honor! Thanks to everyone here for the outpouring of support and praise; it\'s wonderful to have people share in the beauty of the White Mountains that I\'ve been fortunate to experience and capture. I love to hear how people relate to my images!

To answer a few of the questions so far: @ Pearl Edwards / SHARON ZUMPFE - The short of it, many of the foxes in the Whites have grown accustomed to our back-country lifestyle. Though certainly wild, they are curious animals, and I find that with patience they will come in to check you out. I\'ve had great luck with foxes at a few locations...this one specifically was at the summit of Mount Washington.
@Rebecca Holmes ? The aurora photo was indeed taken in New Hampshire...The Northern Lights don\'t often slip this far south, but I\'ve seen them four or five times. They are usually predicted well in advance, and I make sure that I visit sites like spaceweather.com regularly. The solar cycle will caused increasing activity over the next couple of years...

Nice photos......but \"photoshop\" plays way too much a part of photography today. A professional photographer I know said....\"If you spend more than 10 minutes on a photo.....your re-inventing the photo and it\'s not real\".

@Sharon - There is more magic and beauty in the natural world than I could ever hope to create on a computer. I do my best to represent the look and feel of the original scene through a variety of techniques, most of which occur during the pre-processing of the shot. Working hard to be at a location in the right conditions, and balancing the scene with the right tools and filters to control the light that enters the lens has been the main key to my success.
