Aunt Mame's Portuguese Red Soup

Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients:
1 cup split peas2 cups water
1 onion
1/2 small sweet pepper
2 cans (11-1/2 ounce) chicken broth
1 pound mild chourico
1 can (11-1/2 ounce) plain tomato sauce
3 carrots
3 potatoes
1/2 pound spaghetti
1 tablespoon white vinegar
Instructions:
Chop fine the onion and sweet pepper. Cut carrots, potatoes, and chourico into bite-sized pieces. Cook split peas in water over low heat for 20-30 minutes. Add chicken broth, onion, sweet pepper, tomato sauce and chourico. Cook for one hour over medium heat until peas are soft. Add carrots, potatoes, and spaghetti and cook for 15-20 minutes until carrots and potatoes are cooked but still firm.
