Aunt Mary's Biscuits

Bread Recipes

Yield: about 9 big biscuits

This came from my Aunt Mary. She did not have a recipe so she and I sat down and she measured by hand then I used my measuring cups and spoons to get the right measurements. Great old-fashioned homemade biscuits.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • enough milk to make dough sticky

Measure out all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Using a whisk, mix dry ingredients until well blended. Make a well in center. Add shortening and blend well until good and crumbly. Make another well in center and add milk. Combine together until just well blended. Do not overwork the recipe.

Put a stick of butter in your cake pan and place in 450° oven to melt. Take it out of the oven and put it on top of the stove until ready to use. Keep oven on at that temperature so it is hot and ready for your biscuits.

Put enough flour on the counter to just keep from sticking to counter. Put mix on the counter and gently work dough like you would do for biscuits—just do not overwork. Roll out to desired thickness. Using a biscuit cutter, cut out your biscuits. As you place each biscuit in pan be sure to touch top of biscuit with melted butter then turn biscuit over and place bottom in the melted butter. Bake in 450° oven until tops are golden brown. Depending on oven, this should only take about 15-20 minutes but keep an eye on them.
