FIRST PRIZE of $5.00 goes this month to Mrs. Elsie Tripping for her recipe for Chocolate Doughnuts. Mrs. Tripping tells us that this was her grandmother's recipe—who was known as the best doughnut maker in the county!

  • 4 cups sifted flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 10 teaspoons salt
  • 1-1/4 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs, well beaten
  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  • Confectioner's sugar

Sift the flour once, measure and add the baking powder and salt and sift together three times. Add the sugar gradually to eggs, beating thoroughly. Then add the chocolate and vanilla. Add flour alternately with milk ... a small amount at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Knead lightly on a floured board and roll out 1/3 inch thick. Cut with a medium doughnut cutter and fry in deep hot fat preheated to 385 degree F. Takes about three to four minutes to cook doughnuts, Turn frequently, Remove from fat and drain on unglazed paper. Dredge with powdered sugar, or dip in a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon.
