Yield: Makes 4 dozen.

For a special touch, shake some cinnamon sugar on top of these golden, mouth-watering doughnuts. —The Hulbert House, Boonville, New York

  • 8 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 to 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • Oil for frying

In a large bowl sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs and sour cream. Stir in the dry ingredients. Slowly add the buttermilk, using only enough to form a soft dough. Knead slightly on a floured board. Roll the dough out to a 3/4-inch thickness and cut into doughnut shapes with a cutter or with two juice glasses, one smaller than the other. Fry in hot oil at 350°F. for approximately 1-1/2 minutes per side.
