Tom and Jerry

Beverages Recipes

Yield: Serves 4.

This holiday drink, somewhat heavier than eggnog, has diminished in popularity in recent years, perhaps because it requires considerably more fussing. If you make the recipe in quantity, use a punch bowl and cups. Once-popular punch sets with "Tom and Jerry" written on them sometimes turn up at antique shops and flea markets.

  • 2 eggs, separated
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces) light rum
  • 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1-1/3 cups hot milk
  • Whole nutmeg

Beat egg yolks, sugar, and allspice at high speed with an electric mixer until thick. Blend in rum. In separate mixing bowl beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff but not dry. Fold in yolks. Spoon 1/2 cup of the mixture into 4 warmed 8-ounce mugs. Fill each with 1/3 cup hot milk. Grate a bit of nutmeg on top of each mug and serve immediately.
