Ingredients:

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2-1/3 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons chopped, candied orange peel
  • oil for deep frying

Instructions:

Stir yeast into warm water and set aside. Mix together flour, salt, sugar, and nutmeg. Mix dissolved yeast with orange juice, eggs, and orange peel, and stir into flour to make a dough. Knead on a floured board until smooth, then cover and let rise until doubled. Heat oil in an electric skillet or other fryer to 375 degrees F. Drop dough by tablespoons into hot oil.
